Your favorite celebrity couples may seem like the perfect match now, but some have endured rocky roads before getting to their happily ever after. Here’s a look at some of Hollywood’s most turbulent relationships, where the couples have broken up only to reconcile, sometimes years later.

Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Once upon a time, a commoner and a royal fell in love. Initially, Prince William and Kate Middleton were simply fellows at the University of St. Andrews, but eventually, the two started dating after moving in together with some other friends. The couple was frequently photographed on outings together, typically with William’s brother, Prince Harry. They dated for several years, but that all changed in the spring of 2007.

Suddenly, Prince William was an eligible bachelor, and Middleton was a woman on the rebound. Rumors speculated that she dated one of William’s best friends during their split, but the couple quickly reunited. By 2010, the couple were engaged. In an interview with ITV after their engagement announcement, William confirmed that they’d previously broken up but offered a different timeline. According to William, they split up for some time, but they were both young and finding themselves.

He added that they were both trying to find their own way and growing up, so they took some space. Middleton added that at the time, she wasn’t happy about it but said it made her a stronger person. In April 2011, the couple married and have since had three children together: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry.

In 2016, during the “American Idol” season premiere, Katy Perry confirmed she’d met Orlando Bloom at an awards show in January that same year. She said Bloom took a bag of In-N-Out from her table at the Golden Globes. The two reunited at a party and were Instagram official in May, but they split in 2017. Representatives for Bloom and Perry told People Magazine that they were taking loving, respectful space at the time. The couple remained friends and were even spotted on vacation together in 2018.

They confirmed their romance was back on at the Gala for the Global Ocean at the Opera of Monte-Carlo in Monaco. The couple announced their engagement in February 2019, with Perry telling Jimmy Kimmel that Bloom popped the question on Valentine’s Day. In 2020, still engaged, Perry and Bloom announced they were expecting their first child together. They reportedly postponed their nuptials later that year due to the pandemic, but in August 2020, they welcomed their daughter, Daisy Love.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.

By 2007, Justin Timberlake had dated a multitude of beautiful women. After his breakup with Cameron Diaz, he was spotted out with actress Jessica Biel, who had recently split with Derek Jeter. Maintaining a private relationship, the couple dated for several years, although they were seen out in public many times. In March 2011, representatives of both stars addressed rumors that the couple had broken up, confirming that they had decided to part ways. However, they remained friends and held the highest level of respect for each other.

Months later, Timberlake was still singing Biel’s praises, telling Vanity Fair that Biel was the most significant person in his life. However, their breakup didn’t last long, and by December, the couple was engaged. In October of the following year, they married in Italy. The couple has two sons together: Phineas and Silas.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin.

For a while, Justin Bieber had an on-off relationship with Selena Gomez. During one break in their relationship, he started spending time with model Hailey Baldwin, whom he’d met several years before when he was starting his career. In 2014, the couple sparked dating rumors, but Baldwin shot them down, saying they were merely good friends who’ve stayed close. In 2015, after another brief romance with Gomez, Bieber confirmed that he and Baldwin were more than friends, posting a picture of them kissing on New Year’s Eve.

A few months later, they separately confirmed that they weren’t dating due to busy schedules and past relationship mistakes. In March 2016, Bieber told GQ Magazine that Baldwin was someone he really loved, and they spent a lot of time together. He also reflected on his past and alluded to his future, saying he knew he’d hurt people and said things he didn’t mean to make them happy. In reference to the future, Bieber said he wants to ensure he doesn’t damage anyone and referenced Baldwin specifically, saying he didn’t want to hurt her.

The couple wouldn’t last. In a Vogue cover story published after the couple married, Baldwin confirmed that their split during that time was dramatic. After reconciling with Gomez one last time, Bieber finally called off the relationship in 2018 and reunited with Baldwin. They only dated for one month before they were engaged in July, marrying in a civil ceremony that September. In 2019, the couple had a more elaborate wedding in South Carolina and have been married ever since.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship goes back to the early 2000s. When the couple met on the set of “Gigli,” Lopez was married to her second husband, Cris Judd. However, she filed for divorce in June 2002 and was engaged to Affleck by November. The couple was supposed to marry in September 2003 but postponed the wedding days before the big day, citing “excessive media attention.” The couple split in February 2004.

Affleck eventually married Jennifer Garner, while Lopez married singer Marc Anthony. Despite their public breakup, Lopez and Affleck remained cordial, speaking highly of each other in the media.

Lopez dated former baseball player Alex Rodriguez for several years, and the two got engaged. In 2021, they called things off, and months later, Affleck was reportedly seen visiting Lopez. During the summer, they were photographed on multiple occasions, looking like a couple.

In July 2021, their relationship was apparently confirmed when Lopez’s friend Leah Remini posted a video with images of the couple in a photo booth. That same month, Lopez shared a photo of the couple kissing on Instagram. Things progressed naturally for the couple, who got engaged in April 2022. In July, they married in a Las Vegas church and held a star-studded ceremony in Georgia that August.

These couples are prime examples of things happening when they are meant to happen. A breakup doesn’t always mean goodbye, and if both parties are willing, a reconciliation can happen.
