Advent Day 18: Star of Wonder

Star of royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

What was the star the Wise Men saw? Matthew's gospel records that the Magi seeking the King of the Jews "observed his star at its rising," but little is known about what they meant. Some modern-day astronomers continue to be fascinated by the celestial sign.

The Night the Star Appeared
Bible scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan explore the symbolism of light that guided the Magi to the baby Jesus.

Following the Star
Scientists have suggested it was a comet, a supernova, meteors, or bright-shining planets. The truth may be more subtle.
