Twin sisters Rachel Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush were just 3 years old when they were cast to share the role of Carrie Ingalls, Laura's younger sister, on Little House on the Prairie.
After playing Carrie for eight seasons, the sisters left the series at age 12, choosing to step away from acting and focus on school.
"Everybody separated, and I didn't see anybody," Rachel Lindsay recalled during the show's 50th anniversary reunion, according to Entertainment Weekly. "And that was really hard for me personally because I didn't realize how connected I had been to everybody until years later."
"You make these really deep, intense bonds working with each other every single day, and then when it's over, you're just supposed to be like, 'Okay, that was nice. Bye,'" she continued. "And it's really hard that way."
Both sisters officially retired from acting in 1983 to focus on their education, though each made one final screen appearance afterward. Sidney appeared in the 1983 film Hambone and Hillie, while Rachel guest-starred in an episode of Matt Houston.
Rachel later married Daniel Sanchez in 2014. According to People, the two first met when Sanchez lived near the Little House set and would sneak onto the lot to spend time with the cast and crew. She also has an adult daughter from a previous relationship.
Sidney recently became a children's author, publishing Seven Sisters: The Lantern of Humanity.
Reflecting on why she chose not to pursue acting into adulthood, Sidney recently told Fox News Digital that watching her sister narrowly miss out on the lead role in Return to Oz made a lasting impression.
"They all did screen tests, and for the silliest of reasons, they chose another girl over her," Sidney said. "Of course, we all know there can only be one choice in the end, but it's a lot of pressure for children. So I decided I was going to explore other things because sometimes you go to what they call 'cattle calls,' where there are so many people competing for the same role. The casting directors aren't always nice."
Throughout the series, the twins shared a single screen credit under the name "Lindsay Sidney Greenbush."
