According to a source who spoke to People, the decision was largely about the environment they wanted for their children. “They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids,” the source said.
For Mendes and Gosling, their daughters have remained the priority. The same source said their “most important job is their girls” and that the children were thriving after the move. The couple has also worked hard to maintain boundaries between their public careers and private family life.
Mendes has been especially open about how motherhood changed her priorities, stepping away from acting for years while her daughters were young. Their move outside Los Angeles gave the family even more distance from the celebrity culture they wanted their children to avoid.
