Needing God
“Remind Me Who I Am” is a great song to listen to when you are feeling less than adequate, less than worthy or less than capable of doing something with your life. When life gets me down, I turn to this song as my anthem and it automatically strengthens me in both my heart and in my mind with its powerful lyrics. The first time I heard this song was a few years ago, live at a Big Daddy Weave concert with my family. My family, especially my boyfriend, said that the song was written especially for me to remind me who I truly am in Christ.
1st verse: “When I lose my way and I forget my name. Remind me who I am. In the mirror all I see is who I don’t wanna be. Remind me who I am. In the loneliest places. When I can’t remember what grace is. Tell me, once again. Who I am to You, who I am to You. Tell me, lest I forget. Who I am to You, that I belong to You, To You.” This verse explains how we all have felt at one time or another in our lives. Maybe this is how you are feeling right now. We forget who we are in Christ and we forget how far we have come in our lives when hard times strike. We can ask God to remind us who we are in Him and who we are to Him. He reminds us that we are truly His and that we belong to Him. He holds us in the palm of His hands and won’t let us go.
2nd verse: When my heart is like a stone and I’m running far from home. Remind me who I am. When I can’t receive Your love. Afraid I’ll never be enough. Remind me who I am. If I’m Your beloved. Can You help me believe it. Tell me, once again. Who I am to you, who I am to You, whoa. Tell me, lest I forget. Who I am to you, that I belong to You, To You. Our heart can often be like stones if and when we are running far from our home or especially when we are running away from God and turned away from Him. When we run or turn away from God, when we know that we need Him, but don’t know how to receive His love. We are often afraid that we will never be enough because Satan makes us believe his lies and flat out tells us that we will never be good enough to receive God’s love, so why even bother trying for it. We should never believe the lies that he tells us. We are good enough to receive God’s love and we are enough in His eyes. We are so valuable in His eyes that He sent His one and only son to die for all of us.
Bridge: I’m the one You love. I’m the one You love. That will be enough. I’m the one You love. This part of the song speaks for itself telling us that because God already loves us that we are enough for Him and that it is enough that God loves us all equally no matter what we do.
Chorus: Tell me, once again. Who I am to you, who I am to You. Tell me, lest I forget. Who I am to you, that I belong to You, whoa. Tell me, once again. Who I am to You, who I am to You. Tell me, lest I forget, Who I am to You.That I belong to You. To You, To You. The chorus is literally asking God in prayer and in question- tell me Lord we I am to you. Speak to me Lord and tell me who I am to you even when I forget. Tell me and keep reminding me that I am in you and you are in me. That I am yours and yours alone, Lord. Lord please keep reminding me who I am to you, that I’m your child and that you love me despite my wrong doings and flaws and my many faults. Thank you that I am perfect in your sight, not to mention, blameless in your sight.
Prayer-Lord, help us to remember that we are your chosen people and that no matter what we do or what we go through, we are loved, chosen and freed by your holy and precious blood on the cross. Remind us who we are in you and who we are and what we are because of you and your love for us. Thank you that your love can’t ever be matched by anyone else or by anything else. Help us to remember who we are to you and that we belong to you.
