Every once in a while life will throw us a curve ball. We’ll swing, miss and maybe even hit the ground. It happens to the best of us. Let’s face it, sometimes things just don’t work out the way we planned.

When that happens it’s even more important to not dwell on what went wrong or try to figure out why things didn’t work out.

Your mind will want to analyze and figure things out. But if you let your mind have its way, you could end up analyzing and figuring things out for a long, long time. In the process, you’ll never move forward and worse, you’ll end up missing out on some spectacular opportunities.

So just how do you get back on track when you can’t stop thinking about what went wrong or what didn’t quite work out the way you wanted?

3 Steps To Overcome Setbacks

Over the years I’ve come up with a simple system that’s helped thousands of people and it’s one you can use right now or at anytime to get back on track and move forward.

Step One: Accept What Happened

First accept what has happened. You can’t change the past, you can’t change what happened. It’s done. You’re here now and from this point forward you can start building the kind of life you want. This realization gives you tremendous power because it puts you back in control of your life.

That means you can no longer dwell on the past or try to figure out what happened or why. Since you can’t undo the past, there’s really no point trying to solve the mystery of why something didn’t work out. Sure there are lessons to be learned from mistakes and failures. Absorb those lessons and let’s move on to the next step.

Step 2: Focus On What You Want

Next think about what you want next and this means focusing on the outcome or end result you want.

If you lost money, it’s easy to say you want your money back and that’s fine. Just be open to receiving that money you lost in many ways. It may not all come back in one lump sum. You may get small amounts over time. The end result is still getting back what you lost.

If you lost your job, you may feel like you want your old job back. That may not be possible for a number of reasons. However, you could get a better job or one that is just as good as the job you lost, so be open to any possibilities.

You may have had a relationship end, and your knee jerk reaction is to get your ex lover back. But that may not happen so what do you really want? The end result here would be to be in a great relationship with the right person that doesn’t end. It could mean getting back with your ex’ or it could mean meeting someone new and wonderful, just be open to all possibilities.

The important part of step 2 is to focus or think about the outcome or end result that you want. Don’t worry about the how, that will unfold over time. Just be clear on what you want.

By being clear on what you want you send out a new instruction to your subconscious mind, and your higher power. They can then work together to help you achieve your desired outcome as long as you stay focused and clear on the end result you want.

That brings us to the third step – this is the important part and you can’t get to this step without going through the other steps.

Step 3: Get Rid Of The Negative Thoughts

Step 3 requires that you keep the negative thoughts out of your mind. Your mind will come up with all kinds of reasons why you can’t succeed or why you can’t get what you want.

That’s only because that’s what it’s used to thinking: it’s just used to having negative thoughts.

So when you hear thoughts that say something like:

  • “Yeah, right; you can’t do that”
  • “You’re not smart enough”
  • “You don’t know how”
  • “That will never happen”
  • “You’re not good enough”

Or anything similar, recognize that these are just negative thoughts and should be removed and replaced as quickly as possible.

You can replace them with the opposite or with any other positive thought about anything. By simply replacing them you’ll cut off the negative thought, preventing it from attracting more negative thoughts and in the process develop new positive thoughts and create more positive energy.

It’s not about simply being positive or saying positive thoughts.

You have to push yourself to constantly think about the end result that you want and eliminating the negative thoughts that can trip you up.

This means paying more attention to what you’re thinking about and having a clear idea of what you really want.

At first this may be challenging, but the more often you work with these 3 steps the sooner you’ll get back on track, move forward and enjoy the success you want.

Even the most successful people in the world will tell you they’ve had more failures and setbacks than success. Yet they always focus on what they want next and push themselves to move forward.

Use this simple 3 step process and you’ll get back on track and recover from any past setback or failure. Now you can start moving forward.
