Singer Chynna Phillips is opening up about a deeply personal challenge in her marriage to actor Billy Baldwin: her desire for her husband to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

During a recent episode of their podcast, Holding On: Billy Baldwin & Chynna Phillips, the couple candidly discussed how their differing religious beliefs have created tension in their relationship, even as they remain committed to supporting one another.

Phillips, who has been outspoken about her Christian faith, encouraged Baldwin to take a more personal approach to his spiritual journey.

“I just want you to start to call upon the Lord,” she told him, pointing to the Bible’s teaching that even faith as small as a mustard seed can make a difference.

“You have more than a mustard seed,” she assured him.

The Wilson Phillips singer acknowledged that their different perspectives on faith have sometimes created emotional distance between them.

“You and I have this sort of systemic problem in our relationship,” Phillips explained. “You see your life and the world through a very different lens than I do, and sometimes that tends to cause ruptures in our relationship and little chasms.”

She described Christianity as a “glaring issue” in their marriage, admitting that her growing devotion to Jesus has become such a significant part of her life that she sometimes wonders how it will affect their future together.

Baldwin, however, made it clear that he continues to love and support his wife, even if they aren’t in the same place spiritually.

“I still absolutely love you, absolutely adore you and completely support you in your faith,” he said.

“That’s why I’m sitting here now. That’s why we go to church together. That’s why we pray together. That’s why we talk about faith together.”

The actor also pushed back against the suggestion that he has no faith of his own.

“I’m praying with you. I’m going to church. I believe in God. I acknowledge and see the existence of God. I just don’t know in what form that takes,” Baldwin explained.

Phillips responded by emphasizing that Christianity is about more than living according to Jesus’ teachings. She told her husband that salvation comes through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, rather than through personal accomplishments or good works.

Holding Baldwin’s hand, she reminded him that a relationship with God must ultimately be personal.

“Just know that God actually desires to draw close to you,” she said.

“My experience will never be your experience. You need your own encounter with God, and I can’t force that upon you.”

Despite their differences, the conversation ended on a hopeful note as the couple discussed finding a shared purpose in helping others.

Baldwin expressed interest in addressing human trafficking, homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges, while Phillips encouraged them to pray about finding a cause they could pursue together.

The episode concluded with a heartfelt prayer, as Phillips thanked God for her husband’s love, wisdom and willingness to listen.

Baldwin joined her, thanking God for “bringing us together and keeping us together and keeping it so much fun.”

Their conversation offered an intimate look at the challenges of navigating different spiritual beliefs within a marriage, while demonstrating how love, patience and open communication can help couples find common ground.
