Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance shared joyful family news this week: they’re expecting their fourth child. The couple made the announcement on Instagram, writing, “We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
The Vances already have three young children — Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel — who charmed viewers last year during Inauguration events. This new baby places the family among a very small group in American history. According to one report, Usha, 40, “is on track to become only the second known woman in U.S. history to welcome a child while holding the title of second lady,” following Ellen Colfax, who gave birth in 1870.
The announcement also highlighted the pressures of balancing public service and family life. “During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” the Vances shared. In the same post, they added thanks for the care they’ve received, noting, “Usha and the baby are doing well.”
Support poured in from across the administration and political world. The White House amplified the announcement by reposting it with the caption, “The most pro-family administration in history! CONGRATULATIONS!” Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum wrote, “Congratulations, @VP and @SLOTUS! There is no greater joy than being a parent. Honored to work for an administration that puts family first!” White House Press Secretary Karolina Leavitt, who is also expecting, added, “Congratulations to our great @VP and lovely @SLOTUS!”
Usha Vance’s role in the public eye has grown quickly since her husband was selected as President Trump’s running mate. A lawyer by training, she clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh before working as a litigator for Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP. She and JD met as students at Yale Law School and married in 2014.
JD Vance has not shied away from talking about family policy, birth rates, and the cultural importance of raising children. At the 2025 March for Life, he said, “Let me say very simply: I want more babies in the United States of America. I want more happy children in our country, and I want beautiful young men and women who are eager to welcome them into the world and eager to raise them.” He has also expressed concern that America’s declining birth rates point to what he once called a “civilization crisis,” asking during a 2021 event, “Why can’t we actually promote family formation?”
As the Vance family prepares for their new arrival this summer, the second lady continues to make history simply by living it — blending public life, motherhood, and a growing family in a very modern American moment.
