It was already a matter of public record that singer, songwriter, and actor Demi Lovato was rushed to hospital because of a drug overdose on July 24, 2018. But it is only recently that we discovered how bad the situation was for her. In fact, as a result, she has suffered a heart attack and three strokes, leaving some permanent neurological issues.

Although many factors contributed to this, the astrological straw that broke the camel’s back in her case is an unusual and unexpected one.

(No matter what transits are happening, how they play out in your life depends on your individual birth chart. Write me with your date, time, and place of birth — and I’ll send you a copy and a free sneak preview!)

Demi was born August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There is more than one time of birth out there for her, so I’m ignoring that. But even without knowing the House placements and the rulerships involved, there are a lot of signs that drug and alcohol issues might play a role in her life.

Normally when we’re talking about such things, we look first to Neptune in a person’s birth chart. Demi was born with the Uranus-Neptune conjunction. That (in and of itself) does not guarantee that there will be addiction problems. Everyone born around her age has that conjunction after all, and they aren’t all in rehab.

When it comes to “pleasure,” we usually look at Venus and Jupiter in the birth chart. Demi’s Venus and Jupiter are conjunct in Virgo, which is generally considered to be a debilitated placement for both of those planets. In addition, her Mars in Gemini is very closely square that conjunction. Overall, this could make for someone who literally has an “ambition to feel good about things.” That, and I haven’t met too many people in my life who have Moon in Taurus (as Demi does) who enjoy taking a pass on “a good time.”

At the time of her overdose in 2018, transiting Pluto was conjunct Neptune. Again, in and of itself, this is no guarantee of disaster. However those of you born in around the 1990 to 1994 time frame have probably noticed that 2016 to 2020 were the best of times for you.

Transiting Neptune, the usual culprit in such matters, was very closely square her Mars and opposite her Venus and Jupiter. This means that the pressure to escape her daily life would have been not only strong but particularly appealing.

All of these are big, long transits involving very slow planets. It’s extremely difficult to look at transits and say “oh yes, this is the day or week when things finally go to hell.” Major events caused by major transitions are always triggered by smaller and faster transits. And in this case Demi’s overdose was triggered by something really remarkable: her Venus Return.

That’s right. Venus, the “Goddess of beauty and love” as the song says, damn near killed Demi Lovato. It was the final contribution that planet made which triggered the larger events that saw her both in the headlines and the hospital.

Fortunately, this particular combination of transits will not happen again for her in the foreseeable future. Although the potentials in her birth chart indicate she may always have to keep an eye on substance issues, it appears both astrologically — and based on her recent public statements — that she has learned and grown past the point that something like this is going to happen again.

Personally? I wish her well. The world is a happier place with her in it, and who doesn’t love that?
