There is no such thing as a “perfectly average human being.” We all have things that make us relatively unique. I’m not just referring to personality traits, but also to our physical bodies. We are all familiar with genetic conditions that can be debilitating, but most mutations out there aren’t so dramatic. For example, all of my teeth have extra roots. Does this make them better than average teeth? No. Does it make them worse? Probably not. But it was interesting enough for the dentist to mention to me.

This brings me to the case of the woman with two uteruses and two cervixes.

A fellow astrologer was discussing her unusual gynaecological condition on Twitter, and I am grateful that she allowed me the opportunity to write this up for the blog. Let’s call her “Galatea.”

Every organ and every bodily function has an astrological ruler. The reproductive organs, whether male or female, are ruled by Scorpio. Galatea has both Pluto and the North Node in Scorpio in the Eighth House (by Whole Sign Houses). Jupiter is also there.

Since Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio, and it’s in the Sign that it rules, this is an automatic indicator that we should pay attention to this department of life. But it’s when we look at the traditional ruler of Scorpio that things get really wild.

That traditional ruler is Mars, and check out Galatea’s Mars. It is at what is called the “anaretic degree”: the last degree of a Sign. This tends to make a planet particularly powerful and noteworthy. And sure enough, it’s in Gemini… the Twins. Furthermore, that Mars is completely lacking in major aspects to any other planet in the birth chart. A planet in this condition can be thought of as sometimes going a bit wild, or as being unsupervised.

Although there is no reason to believe that Galatea cannot become pregnant or have a baby, there are some health risks associated with her condition. An over-abundance of female hormones can increase the chance of certain cancers occurring.

For general health, we look at the Sixth House. In her case, it is ruled by Mercury. What’s significant about that is that Mercury is in the Sign behind the Sixth House : the “12th House of the House it rules.” This can indicate potential problems with matters concerning the House in question.

I’m certainly no doctor. Even if I was, I’d want to run some tests before I made any pronouncements. But in this case I am a bit concerned by that particular risk factor. “Hormones” in general in medical astrology are ruled by the Moon and/or Venus. The human endocrine system creates and circulates about 50 different hormones… so yeah, it’s complicated.

But we should note that Galatea’s Moon is in Sagittarius, in the Ninth House. Normally that would be a great placement, except that (once again) its ruler Jupiter is in the 12th House of that House. And her Venus, although very nicely placed in Libra in the Seventh House, is another example of a planet not receiving any major aspect from any other planet. Okay, sure… there is a Moon-Venus sextile, but with nine degrees of orb involved, I don’t really want to count it.

What fascinates me about this is that there is no way that, had Galatea approached me as a client, that I would’ve looked at her chart and automatically said “okay, two uteruses and two cervixes, eh?” But there are enough interesting factors here that questions of reproductive health matters would have almost certainly arisen.

It’s strange the things astrology can cover sometimes, isn’t it?
