Mercury has entered Gemini, and will be there until May 28th. This is normally an occasion when someone who writes about astrology will point out that Gemini is a pretty good place for Mercury to be. After that, there would be a temptation to go on and talk about communications or texting people too much or gossiping or whatever things associated with Gemini that the writer in question finds amusing.

(Wondering what the next few months hold in store for you? Write me with your date, time, and place of birth — and I’ll send you a free sneak preview!)

Generally though, it’s a sort of thing that doesn’t get a lot of attention, because to be honest Mercury is kind of a lightweight in the eyes of a lot of people. If something terrible happens, everyone goes looking to Saturn or Pluto first, not Mercury.

This time is different though. I believe this time around that, if we ignore or diminish the role of Mercury? We are all going to suffer.

You may have noticed of late that everyone has an opinion, they’re all loud, and they’re often poorly researched. Yes, I am referring primarily to numerous items that have had to be pulled repeatedly from Facebook and Twitter because they contain dangerous disinformation. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, ask a friend. That friend will more than likely either be willing to tell you all about it, or provide you with fresh disinformation.

Mercury is about using your brain, doing some reading and research, and thinking logically. Since Mercury rules Gemini, in theory this means that over the course of the next few weeks we will all have a chance to become a little bit smarter if we learn how to do a little more thinking. This assumes we simply don’t just continue to parrot whatever memes or YouTube videos that comes along that agree with our beliefs.

In psychology, this sort of thing is called “confirmation bias.” Confirmation bias, by the way, is one of the things that skeptics who don’t really understand astrology used to dismiss astrology. So if you’re a fan of astrology, you should probably read up on it and how it works.

Even if you aren’t heavily invested in conspiracy theories, you may have noticed a lot of nonsense going around on Facebook and Twitter. The reason you can tell that it’s nonsense is because it falls apart quickly under the weight of a little research. That, and you can tell it’s nonsense because you disagree with it.

Wait. Wait a minute. Isn’t the stuff I agree with accurate and the stuff I disagree with false?

Well no, not necessarily. Too often we dismiss the things we don’t want to think about without looking to see whether or not they are true. this runs contrary to the spirit of both Mercury and Gemini. Gemini has a reputation for being able to see both sides of an issue. That’s often because Gemini has bothered to research both sides.

With both Mercury and the North Node in Gemini now, I believe this is a call for us to be clear-headed about what we believe, and being able to prove it. So get to work on doing your research before you re-post that COVID-19 meme, and before Mercury square Neptune kicks in a couple of weeks from now and we’re all back to the Land Of Stupid once more…
