An accident changes everything for wealthy Will Traynor, a lover of life. Me Before You (2016; UK, USA) is about a life changing event that happens unexpectedly and puts Will on a road of no return.

Life altering events have the power to put life on hold for a long time and have an effect on the soul.

A life is bent out of shape, perhaps forever, and even if life did improve, it would not be the same.

Will was living the high life and enjoying every minute of it, but in a moment of distraction, a vehicle plowed into him.

The accident caused him spinal damage.

He won’t get re-involved in his former way of life, even in a limited way. Whatever he can and cannot do anymore seems mute. He exists.

A caregiver’s charm

Will is difficult. He goes through five caregivers and the latest one will just be another one he can turn away.

Louisa just gets sick of dealing with him, but she needs the money so endures, from her point of view, his shock value.

After a while, this caregiver gets through to him. Her beauty, charm and chattiness disarm the discouraged man.

Is a love story on the horizon? Will there be a new beginning? Could be. Even so, everything has changed for Will in a most disheartening way. He’s more than forlorn. He’s dead inside.

Me Before You explores the right to die theme.

As a general theme, the accident has changed everything.

Louisa brightens his life for some time, but the accident was one of those defining moments in life.

Then a choice must be taken on what to do with his lot in life, choice which is faced in pain and difficulty.
