Why does it seem so hard to be kind to those who may have hurt us, when kindness itself is a gentle master? We must realize in our moment of need that the only thing being “hard” on us is an unseen indwelling unkindness, and then refuse it a home in our heart.

The longer you dwell on some dark thought or feeling, the deeper the special kind of hell you get to experience as the cost of imagining — and then identifying with — a false sense of “I” that not only believes in the world it has created for itself, but that no other world exists.

True strength of character is not just calculated by how well we manage to carry some sizable load under challenging conditions, but is perhaps better measured by our ability to remain kind and light-spirited . . . even when we’re sure that we can’t bear the weight of one more ounce of life.
