Inscrutable
By
xscot mcknight
Paul knows God’s ways are unsearchable and inscrutable, and it behooves each one of us to bow before the ways of God in this world. About the time we think we’ve got God’s ways figured out, we discover that there is far more to God’s ways than we ever imagined. When Paul comes to the…
Women in Ministry: Ruth Tucker
By
xscot mcknight
Ruth Tucker is a former colleague of mine from my days at Trinity and she is the co-author of the very influential Daughters of the Church (with Walt Liefeld). Ruth is an excellent teacher, writer about women’s issues, a columnist, and an observer of religious trends (and sectarian movements). A few years ago I heard…

In LeRon Shults’ book, Reforming the Doctrine of God, the 4th chp takes on “God as First Cause,” and once again puts the way this has been understood to the test of whether it measures up to the biblical concept of eschatology and time and whether or not it is the imposition of alien categories.
Irrevocable
By

God’s promise to Israel — that covenant promise that begins at Genesis 12 — is, according to Paul, “irrevocable” (Rom. 11:29). What is now will not be the way things always will be. As Gentiles have now been moved into that covenant blessing, so “Israel” will be eventually.

All Israel 2

Who is Israel in the “all Israel” will be saved (Rom. 11:26)? There are three basic options: 1. Spiritual Israel: the Church and all (elected) Jews who believe in Jesus as Messiah. 2. Ethnic Jews: either those at the time of Paul or the final generation before the Parousia. 3. Twelve-tribe Israel: Israel, then, is…

In-God, Un-God 2

We rightly call God “person,” but what is meant by calling God “person”? In LeRon Shults, Reforming the Doctrine of God, the history of how theologians have understood “person” is sketched. Revealingly. Ponder this statement: “… the question is not whether our concepts grasp God, but whether our experience of being grasped by God is…
