What started as a routine cross-country flight turned into a life-changing moment at 30,000 feet when a passenger gave birth aboard a Portland-bound Delta flight—just 30 minutes before landing.

Delta Flight 478 was traveling from Atlanta to Portland when a woman unexpectedly went into labor mid-air. With no hospital in sight and limited medical supplies on board, it quickly became an all-hands-on-deck situation.

As it turns out, help was already in the air.

A doctor and two nurses were among the passengers and rushed to assist, working alongside flight attendants to deliver the baby safely. Among them was Oregon EMT Tina Fritz, who described the experience as unforgettable.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, actually,” Fritz told KOIN 6.

Fritz and her colleague, fellow EMT Caarin Powell, had to improvise due to the lack of proper medical equipment. “I asked for an OB kit, which they did not have. I asked for blankets, which they did not have,” Fritz said. “So I was like, okay, we need to get blankets from passengers. I need some shoestrings. So the flight attendant took his shoestring out, cut it for us.”

Despite the challenging conditions, the delivery happened quickly and without complications.

“She’s like, I gotta push, I gotta push. And within three really good pushes, the baby was out and doing perfect,” Fritz said. “Mom was a rock star, like, mom did so good.”

The baby girl was born safely as the plane began its descent into Portland International Airport. With no time to secure themselves properly, Fritz and Powell braced as the aircraft touched down.

“I cut the cord and we wrapped her up, and they’re like, the plane is touching down, so Kaarin grab the seat. And I grabbed the seat. We didn’t get anything buckled, and we just landed,” Fritz recalled. “Then, we gave baby back to mom, and we taxied in, so the whole plane cheered for mom. It was great.”

Passengers on board described the moment as both surreal and emotional. One traveler told KPTV, “It was pretty wild just to see it all happen.”

Atlanta resident Jess Cushenberry, who was traveling with her daughter, said there had been another medical situation earlier in the flight, adding to the confusion. “I actually didn’t know what was going on at first,” she said. “And then somehow my seatmate found out that there was a baby being born.”

Cushenberry, who has given birth herself, said she was struck by how calm the mother remained. “I’ve given birth, and I’ve given birth naturally, so I know it is not a comfortable situation. And she wasn’t yelling or screaming or anything,” she said. She even offered her own blanket when the crew asked for help.

She also praised the airline staff for their composure. “They really did a great job of doing their jobs and keeping everybody calm and sorted and organized,” she said.

After landing, emergency medical services met the plane and transported the mother and newborn, who were both reported to be in stable condition.

In a statement, Delta spokesperson Sabrina Cole thanked those who stepped in. “We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland,” she said. “The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best.”

In a moment that could have turned chaotic, strangers came together in a powerful display of compassion and quick thinking—welcoming new life into the world in one of the most unexpected places imaginable.
