A family gathering in Stockton, California, turned into heartbreak over the weekend when a shooter entered the event and opened fire, killing four and wounding several others. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said that “a total of 15 individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident,” including four deaths. The victims who died were just 8, 9, and 14 years old, along with a 21-year-old adult.

Authorities called it “an active and ongoing investigation,” adding they believe this was “a targeted incident” and not a random attack. In their statement, the sheriff’s office shared, “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this devastating violence,” and urged the public to help move the investigation forward: “We urge anyone with additional information, video footage, or who may have witnessed any part of this incident to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office immediately.”

Multiple agencies have joined forces to support the case, including the Delta Police Department, Lathrop Police Department, Manteca Police Department, Stockton Police Department, Stockton Unified School District Police, Tracy Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the District Attorney Investigator, and the California Department of Justice. Federal partners are assisting as well. According to the sheriff’s office, “the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives” are providing support as authorities work through leads.

Local leaders expressed grief and solidarity with the families. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee wrote on Facebook that this “moment is not about politics — it’s about people.” He continued, “It’s about children, parents, and an entire community trying to make sense of something that should never have happened. Children should never lose their lives like this. Our community deserves answers, healing, and justice.” Lee added a personal word to those suffering: “To the families impacted, to the loved ones grieving, and to every child and parent shaken by this tragedy — my thoughts, my prayers, and my heart are with you tonight. Stockton is my home, and your pain is my pain.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom also weighed in, saying, “Our hearts break for their families and the entire Stockton community,” and noted that his office is monitoring the investigation.

As of now, the suspect remains at large. Oakland-based KTVU reports that authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to “a significant arrest.”

For believers across California and beyond, this is a moment to mourn with those who mourn and to pray for comfort, protection, and swift justice. When violence tears through a community—especially one gathered to celebrate family—followers of Christ are called to lift up the brokenhearted and to seek the peace of the city (Jeremiah 29:7). May God strengthen first responders and investigators, bring healing to the injured, and surround grieving families with His presence. And may the One who is near to the brokenhearted sustain Stockton in the days ahead.
