Sen. Mark Warner is mourning the devastating loss of his daughter, Madison Warner, who died at the age of 36 after a long battle with juvenile diabetes and other health complications — a tragedy that has prompted an outpouring of prayer and support from leaders across the nation.

In a heartfelt statement shared with his wife, Lisa Collis, the Virginia Democrat expressed the depth of the family’s grief. “We are heartbroken beyond words by the passing of our beloved daughter, Madison, 36, after a decades-long battle with juvenile diabetes and other health issues,” Warner said. “She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void.”

The family also acknowledged the support surrounding them during this painful time. “We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss,” the statement concluded.

Madison was the eldest of the couple’s three daughters and is survived by her sisters, Gillian and Eliza. Her life, though marked by significant health challenges, clearly left a lasting impact on those who knew and loved her.

In the wake of the announcement, lawmakers from both political parties set aside differences to express sympathy and lift the Warner family in prayer. Rep. Nancy Mace wrote, “Our deepest condolences… We’re keeping your family in our prayers.” Sen. Mike Lee echoed that call, urging others to join him: “Please join me in praying for Senator Mark Warner and his family. This is heartbreaking news.”

Sen. Rand Paul simply added, “We’re praying for @MarkWarner,” while Rep. August Pfluger shared, “I am incredibly sorry for your loss… Keeping you and your family in my prayers.” Vice President JD Vance also offered condolences, writing, “Our prayers are with Sen. Warner, his daughter, and their whole family… What a terrible loss at such a young age. May God comfort them.”

Virginia leaders likewise expressed their grief. Gov. Abigail Spanberger said the “entire Virginia delegation stands with Mark and Lisa during this period of profound grief,” while former Gov. Glenn Youngkin shared, “Our prayers are with them on this most difficult of all days.”

Moments like these serve as a sobering reminder of life’s fragility — and the deep comfort that faith, prayer, and community can bring in seasons of sorrow. Scripture reminds us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18), a truth many are holding onto as the Warner family grieves.

Heavenly Father, we lift up Senator Mark Warner, Lisa, and their entire family to You in this time of deep sorrow. Wrap them in Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Comfort their hearts as they grieve the loss of Madison, and remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted. Surround them with Your love, strength, and the support of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
