Rev. Derek Dumas, longtime pastor of Greater Lizzieboro Baptist Church in Macon, passed away Friday morning at the age of 53. According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, Dumas died of reported natural causes at Atrium Hospital, surrounded by his family.

For more than two decades, Dumas faithfully led his congregation, stepping into the role after his grandfather, Rev. Moses Dumas, passed away. What followed was a ministry marked by consistency, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving both his church and the broader community.

Dumas was actively involved in several organizations, including the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia and the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., reflecting a life that extended beyond the pulpit into leadership and mentorship.

His educational journey reflected his dedication to both service and spiritual growth. Dumas earned a Bachelor of Science in public administration from Georgia College and State University and later pursued a Master of Science in theology from Southern Christian University.
