A Georgia community is mourning the loss of a beloved pastor whose life and ministry left a lasting spiritual impact on countless lives.

Rev. Derek Dumas, longtime pastor of Greater Lizzieboro Baptist Church in Macon, passed away Friday morning at the age of 53. According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, Dumas died of reported natural causes at Atrium Hospital, surrounded by his family.

For more than two decades, Dumas faithfully led his congregation, stepping into the role after his grandfather, Rev. Moses Dumas, passed away. What followed was a ministry marked by consistency, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving both his church and the broader community.

Dumas was actively involved in several organizations, including the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia and the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., reflecting a life that extended beyond the pulpit into leadership and mentorship.

His educational journey reflected his dedication to both service and spiritual growth. Dumas earned a Bachelor of Science in public administration from Georgia College and State University and later pursued a Master of Science in theology from Southern Christian University.

In the wake of his passing, tributes have poured in celebrating not just his accomplishments but the character behind them. A statement from Forrest B. Johnson & Associates described Dumas as a man whose life “exemplified purpose, power, and unwavering faith.”

“Dr. Dumas was not only a preacher of the Word, but a living testament to it — leading with integrity, serving with humility, and pouring into others with a genuine and selfless spirit,” the tribute read.

Those who knew him remember a leader who didn’t just speak about faith but lived it out daily. “His voice carried wisdom. His presence commanded respect. His life inspired transformation,” the statement continued.

Perhaps most powerfully, Dumas is being remembered for the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy not defined by titles, but by the lives he touched. “He didn’t just uplift people — he equipped them to rise,” the tribute added.

For Christians reflecting on his life, Dumas’ story is a reminder of what it means to run the race faithfully. Scripture calls believers to serve with humility and to invest in others, and those who knew him say he embodied those truths in both word and action.

While his passing leaves a deep void, his impact will continue through the countless people he discipled, encouraged, and inspired over the years. In moments like this, when words fall short, and hearts are heavy, many turn to prayer—seeking comfort, strength, and the peace only God can provide.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life of Rev. Derek Dumas and the faithful service he gave to Your people. Comfort his family, his church, and all who are grieving this loss. Remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted and that his legacy lives on in the lives he touched. Help us to live with the same purpose, humility, and unwavering faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
