A young Ohio teacher who had recently become engaged and was just beginning his career was killed in a fiery crash that authorities say involved a suspected drunk driver who had previously been deported from the United States.

Cameron Lyon, 23, died following the Sept. 6 crash on U.S. Route 33 in Fairfield County. His fiancée, 23-year-old Abrielle Kerns, was also injured. The couple had recently become engaged and was building a future together.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lyon was driving west when an eastbound GMC Terrain driven by 33-year-old Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez left the roadway. The SUV overcorrected, crossed into the westbound lanes and struck Lyon’s Chevrolet Trax before catching fire. Investigators said alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.

Lyon was transported to Fairfield Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Uribe-Gonzalez suffered minor injuries and was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating a vehicle without a valid license. Court records cited by local media show his bond was set at $5 million.

The Department of Homeland Security said Uribe-Gonzalez, a Mexican national, illegally entered the United States through Texas in January 2020 and was arrested by Border Patrol. An immigration judge issued a final removal order, and he was deported to Mexico in April 2020. DHS said he later reentered the country illegally at an unknown date and location. ICE lodged a detainer following his latest arrest.

The tragedy has drawn attention beyond the criminal charges and immigration questions because of the young life lost.

Lyon had graduated from Otterbein University in 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in education and history before beginning his career as a social studies teacher at Crestline Middle School. His obituary describes him as funny, outgoing and welcoming to others. He was also an Eagle Scout, an accomplished violinist and a member of Caledonia Memorial Methodist Church.

Crestline Exempted Village Schools said its community was heartbroken over the loss of the fifth- and sixth-grade teacher.

“Our hearts are broken for his family, his fiancee, his students, his colleagues and all those whose lives he touched,” the district said, asking the community to keep Lyon’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers. Counselors were also made available to students and staff grieving his death.

Lyon had proposed to Kerns only a few months before his death. His obituary says a celebration of life would be held later so Kerns could have time to recover and attend.

As the investigation continues and the case moves through the courts, a family is mourning a son and brother, students have lost a teacher, and a young woman is facing a future very different from the one she and Lyon had planned.
