A day that began with a joyful baptism of one of their children ended in unimaginable heartbreak for an Arizona couple after their 5-year-old son died inside a hot car while loved ones gathered at their home to celebrate.

Mihail and Anca Sabo attended church September 13th with their children, where one of them was baptized. Afterward, the family returned to their Peoria home for a celebration with about 50 friends and relatives.

But amid the activity, their youngest son, Theo, remained asleep inside the family vehicle.

Police said the family arrived home around 1 p.m. and that a miscommunication apparently led family members to believe someone else had taken the boy out of the car.

“It appears that it was a miscommunication between family members of who was actually going to get the child out of the car,” Peoria police Officer William Kennedy told KNXV.

When Theo was eventually discovered, family members pulled him from the vehicle and desperately tried to save him with CPR. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The family’s grief was soon followed by another devastating development. A Maricopa County Superior Court judge found probable cause Monday to charge both parents with negligent homicide and child abuse. Bond was set at $150,000 each, and the couple was ordered to have no contact with one another.

Anca reportedly wept during the court hearing.

Mihail’s cousin, Ligia Simon, who said she was at the family’s home when the tragedy occurred, described Theo’s death as a heartbreaking accident.

“Because I was there, I can say from my own experience that what happened was a devastating accident,” Simon wrote on Facebook. “It is agonizing to watch people I love endure the loss of their precious little boy while also confronting everything that has followed.”

Friends and members of the Christian community are now rallying around the family. A GoFundMe campaign addressed to the “Body of Christ” is seeking to help the Sabos as they grieve and face the legal proceedings ahead.

“There are simply no words for the pain of losing a child,” organizers wrote. “As the Sabo family walks through these incredibly difficult days, we want to surround them with love, prayer, and practical support so they can focus on grieving, being together, and honoring Theo’s precious life.”

Police are also using the tragedy to remind families how quickly a simple miscommunication can have irreversible consequences.

“We like to say, look before you lock,” Kennedy said. “Always ensure and have clear communication on who is taking responsibility for that child.”

He encouraged parents and caregivers to make a habit of checking their vehicles before walking away, especially when routines change or several adults are caring for children.

“It takes two seconds to take another look and ensure and go through the car one more time,” Kennedy said. “It could save a life.”

For the Sabo family, however, the warning comes after an unimaginable loss. A Sunday meant to celebrate a milestone of faith is now forever intertwined with the death of their youngest child. As they mourn Theo and face an uncertain road ahead, their Christian community is asking others to surround the family with prayer, compassion and support.
