Justin Herbert has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s most reserved stars. But just days after announcing his engagement to pop singer Madison Beer, the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback couldn’t hide his excitement, calling his fiancée “the best” and saying she’s everything he’s “always dreamed of.”

The couple surprised fans by announcing their engagement in a series of romantic Instagram photos, with Beer captioning the post simply, “Meet my fiancé.” The news quickly drew congratulations from across the sports and entertainment worlds, adding another high-profile athlete-musician couple to the spotlight.

During Chargers training camp, Herbert opened up about the engagement in a candid interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, offering one of the most heartfelt glimpses fans have seen into his personal life.

“It’s been so incredible,” Herbert said. “She’s changed my life, and it’s something I never thought was possible. It’s so awesome to find your person and to be able to spend your life with them. I’m excited and just can’t wait. She’s the best.”

Known for giving short, football-focused answers, Herbert even laughed when he was told it was one of the longest responses he’d ever given to the media, joking that it was “the first good question” he’d been asked.

He continued by describing the kind of relationship he’d always hoped to find.

“It’s the best. It’s what I’ve always dreamed of,” Herbert said. “To have someone that I can share everything with and live with and trust completely, there’s no better feeling.”

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Herbert’s excitement comes as no surprise. Speaking on the Up & Adams Show, Harbaugh shared that the quarterback had told the team earlier this summer he planned to propose and said everyone was thrilled for him.

“He lights up when he talks about her,” Harbaugh said, adding that when Beer first started spending time around the team, “everyone raved about what a nice person she is.”

Harbaugh also offered a bit of marriage advice for the newly engaged couple, encouraging them to “attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind together.”

The couple first went public with their relationship last year and have been seen together regularly ever since. Earlier this summer, Beer shared that dating Herbert even helped her overcome a longtime fear of flying. Watching how frequently the quarterback travels during the NFL season gave her confidence to fly more often so she could support him at games.

Herbert now enters his seventh NFL season hoping to lead the Chargers on another playoff run after guiding the team to the postseason three times in the past four years. But after hearing him speak so openly about Beer, it’s clear the milestone he’s celebrating most isn’t on the football field. For the usually soft-spoken quarterback, finding the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with is a dream come true.
