A new chapter in one of the most beloved faith-infused fantasy worlds is officially on the way, as Netflix has revealed the release date and cast for its highly anticipated adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew—the origin story of Narnia.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film will debut in theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with exclusive IMAX previews beginning February 10. It will then arrive on Netflix on April 2, signaling a major push by the streaming giant to position the project as a global cinematic event.

The film brings together an impressive cast, including rising stars David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, as well as well-known actors Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep. With such a mix of fresh talent and established names, expectations are already building for a powerful retelling of the classic story.

Originally published in 1955 by C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew serves as the creation story of Narnia, exploring how a fantastical world came into being—most memorably through the image of a majestic lion singing it into existence. For many readers, that moment carries deep spiritual symbolism, reflecting themes of creation, authority, and divine power.

Gerwig, best known for films like Little Women and Barbie, described the project as deeply personal. She shared that Lewis’ writing shaped her imagination as a child, inspiring her belief that “anywhere could be enchanted” and that even ordinary people could be swept into extraordinary stories. “It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being,” she said.

The C.S. Lewis Estate also praised Gerwig’s vision, saying her approach brings “joy, heart and genuine love for the story” as it introduces Narnia to a new generation.

Lewis, who passed away in 1963, remains one of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th century. A close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis was known for weaving deep theological truths into imaginative storytelling. His works continue to resonate because they speak to both the heart and the mind—inviting readers to wrestle with faith, doubt, and the nature of truth.

Over the years, The Chronicles of Narnia has been adapted multiple times, including a BBC series and a successful film series that grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Yet this marks the first time The Magician’s Nephew will be brought to the screen, offering audiences a fresh starting point into the world of Narnia.

As anticipation builds, the film represents more than just another fantasy adaptation. For many, it’s an opportunity to revisit a story that has long pointed readers toward deeper spiritual realities—reminding them that behind every great story is a greater author.
