A surprising but deeply meaningful collaboration is making waves across both Christian and mainstream music, as Brandon Lake and Nick Jonas join forces for a new release centered on faith, identity, and the search for hope.
The two artists dropped a two-song project on May 1, featuring the reflective new single “The Author” alongside a reimagined version of “Hope,” a track originally from Jonas’ solo album Sunday Best. The collaboration comes after weeks of online teasers and has quickly sparked conversation for its honest, faith-driven message.
“The Author” opens with vulnerable lyrics from Lake: “Picked up the Book for the first time in ages / Still washed me clean with the dust on the pages,” setting the tone for a song that wrestles with self-worth, purpose, and surrender. The chorus cuts to the heart of the message: “Who am I to question the pen in the hands of the Author?”—a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty over every life story.
Jonas enters the second verse with his own candid reflection: “I lost the plot every time I played God,” acknowledging the struggle many face when trying to control their own path rather than trusting the One who writes it. Together, their voices create a compelling picture of what it looks like to wrestle with identity while rediscovering faith.
The song was born out of a writing camp hosted by Lake in late 2025, and it reflects the worship leader’s growing influence beyond traditional Christian music spaces. Fresh off his Grammy-winning collaboration “Hard Fought Hallelujah” with Jelly Roll, Lake continues to bridge the gap between church and culture, reaching audiences who may not typically engage with worship music.
For Jonas, the collaboration feels especially personal. A member of the Jonas Brothers has spoken openly about his complicated faith journey, particularly after his father lost his pastoral position when the band signed a record deal in 2005. The transition uprooted the family and forced Jonas to wrestle with both faith and identity during a pivotal time in his life.
“It took a lot of faith, and even questioning faith at that time,” Jonas shared in a past interview. “You look up and life just looked very different.” Still, he now says his relationship with God remains intact, even after seasons of doubt and pain.
That tension between struggle and belief is echoed in “Hope,” where Jonas sings, “I need some hope… I’m praying that the devil loosens up his hold,” offering a raw glimpse into the spiritual battles many listeners quietly face.
Lake has said his goal is to reach both believers and those who feel distant from God—especially those carrying wounds from the church. “Your primary call isn’t to ministry, it’s to intimacy,” he said. “Let everything flow from that.”
In a time when many are searching for meaning and identity, “The Author” stands as a reminder that no story is beyond redemption—and that even in seasons of doubt, God is still writing something beautiful.
