Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart is being remembered in a powerful new way as anticipation builds for “Jimmy,” an upcoming biopic exploring the legendary actor’s military service, faith, and personal struggles behind the fame.

The first trailer for the film was recently unveiled ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on Nov. 6. According to the filmmakers, the movie focuses on the untold story of Stewart’s service during World War II — a chapter of his life many fans may not fully know.

The celebration surrounding the trailer debut took place in Stewart’s hometown of Indiana on May 20, which would have marked the actor’s 118th birthday. Cast members, producers, and Stewart’s family gathered at the Jimmy Stewart Museum to open a brand-new exhibit dedicated to the making of the film.

Actor KJ Apa, best known for his role in the TV series “Riverdale,” portrays Stewart in the film. He joined director Aaron Burns and Stewart’s daughter, Kelly Stewart-Harcourt, during the hometown event.

“Jimmy Stewart was a hero,” Apa said during the celebration. “His legacy of service to the United States, his global reach through his films, and his devotion to his family are unparalleled.”

Apa added that stepping into the role carries enormous responsibility.

“Our goal is to honor his legacy, service, and family through ‘Jimmy’ and share his story to remind audiences that heroes such as Jimmy did and still do exist,” he said.

The museum’s new exhibit, “The Making of ‘Jimmy,’” features props, costumes, and behind-the-scenes photos from the production, offering fans a closer look at the film and Stewart’s remarkable legacy.

While Stewart is best remembered for beloved classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Burns said the actor’s real-life story is just as inspiring as anything seen on screen.

In a previous interview, Burns explained that Stewart grew up in a small-town Christian home with a father who served as a deacon in the Presbyterian church. As Stewart rose to fame in Hollywood, he eventually wrestled with deeper questions about purpose and identity.

Despite becoming one of the biggest movie stars of his generation, Stewart reportedly wondered whether he was simply a “fake movie star” or someone capable of genuine heroism.

As World War II intensified, Stewart made a life-changing decision to leave Hollywood behind and enlist in the Army Air Corps. Already an experienced pilot, he eventually became a squadron commander leading bombing missions over Europe.

Burns said one of the most moving parts of Stewart’s story involved a letter from his father before he deployed overseas. Tucked inside the letter was a copy of Psalm 91 — a passage reminding Stewart of God’s protection and presence.

“It’s about the Lord’s comfort and Lord being with you,” Burns explained. Stewart carried the Scripture with him during every mission.

Though Stewart returned home safely, the emotional toll of war stayed with him. Burns said the actor suffered deeply after witnessing the loss of many men under his command and struggled to find his footing again in Hollywood.

That season of uncertainty eventually led Stewart back to the screen through a call from director Frank Capra, who offered him the role of George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The film would go on to become one of America’s most beloved movies — and a story many Christians continue to embrace for its message of hope, sacrifice, purpose, and the value of every human life.

Burns said that is exactly why Stewart’s story still matters today.

“I want my kids to be able to know the hero that Jimmy Stewart was,” he said, “and to see what the powerful prayers and love of a father for their son — the impact that that can make.”
