Hollywood’s biggest night delivered plenty of memorable moments as the 98th Academy Awards honored a year of standout storytelling, breakthrough performances, and a few historic firsts. Leading the evening was One Battle After Another, the sweeping drama from director Paul Thomas Anderson, which dominated the ceremony with six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. After nearly three decades of nominations without a win, Anderson finally took home multiple statuettes, also earning recognition for his adapted screenplay. Accepting one of the awards, the filmmaker kept things light, telling the audience, “What a night! Let’s have a martini.”

While Anderson’s film led the pack, it wasn’t the only movie making headlines. The horror drama Sinners collected four Oscars, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed twin characters Smoke and Stack. During his speech, Jordan thanked the filmmakers and studio for “betting on original ideas and original artistry.” Meanwhile, Irish actress Jessie Buckley completed an awards season sweep with a Best Actress win for her emotional performance in Hamnet, portraying a mother shattered by grief.

The night also featured several memorable milestones and surprises. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first woman to win an Oscar for cinematography for her work on Sinners. Veteran actress Amy Madigan, 75, earned Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, marking a late-career triumph. Hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, the ceremony mixed humor, heartfelt speeches, and a celebration of creativity as Hollywood recognized the year’s top films.
