Kelly Clarkson has opened up for the first time since the heartbreaking death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock. The American Idol alum shared an emotional message on Instagram, choosing to mark the 23rd anniversary of her reality show win with words of gratitude for her fans.
“To everyone that took time 23 years ago to call in and vote for me, thank you ? Winning American Idol changed my life and I will be forever grateful for all of you that have supported me for so many years,” Clarkson, 43, wrote. “It is a gift to find your purpose and passion, and to be able to make a living doing it is the cherry on top. Thank you, always.”

Her words came less than a month after the death of Blackstock, her former manager and the father of her two children. Blackstock, 48, passed away on August 7 in Butte, Montana, after a three-year battle with melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. His family confirmed, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.”
Silver Bow County Coroner Dan Hollis told Fox News Digital that Blackstock died under hospice care and that his manner of death was natural causes. The family added in their statement, “We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
Clarkson and Blackstock were married in 2013 at the picturesque Blackberry Farm in Tennessee and later welcomed daughter River, 11, and son Remington, 9. Though their divorce was finalized in 2022 after a contentious split, sources say Clarkson had quietly stepped back from some of her professional commitments to care for Blackstock in his final months. “It’s been exhausting and so sad,” a source previously told Page Six. “Kelly has been working so hard, as well as looking after Brandon. Despite their difficult divorce, he’s still the man she loved and still her kids’ father.”
The singer canceled part of her Las Vegas residency in August, telling fans, “I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.” She had already shocked viewers earlier this year by pausing The Kelly Clarkson Show, which insiders linked to her desire to prioritize her family during Blackstock’s illness.
Now, as Clarkson steps back into the public eye, she is preparing for a return to work. Production for The Kelly Clarkson Show begins this month, with its seventh season premiering September 29. The lineup of guests includes Julia Roberts, Dwayne Johnson, and Emily Blunt. Meanwhile, her Las Vegas residency is expected to resume in November.
Clarkson’s recent Instagram message shows a woman choosing gratitude in the midst of grief. Her words remind fans not only of her journey from small-town Texas to global fame but also of her strength as she walks through one of life’s hardest seasons. And while she will no doubt continue to process her loss, her testimony of thankfulness resonates with those who believe in holding onto hope and faith—even in times of deep sorrow.
