Despite low theater attendance due to the nationwide precautions to avoid the coronavirus, moviegoers were out to support the faith-based film “I Still Believe,” which opened Friday at No. 2 overall at the box office.

Typically a faith-based movie like “I Still Believe” this would see a solid Sunday, bolstered by churchgoers heading to the cinema after services. With most churches are closed around the nation, many were expecting the movie to flop. Surprisingly, though, it kept holding on and managed to bring in $9.5 million.

“I Still Believe” is the story of Christian country singer Jeremy Camp and his first wife, who died from ovarian cancer 4 1/2 months after they were married. It’s like “Love Story” with a faith spin, but don’t forget to bring the tissues. It’s a tear-jerker.

In an Instagram post, Jeremy Camp thanked those for still supporting the movie during the COVID-19 outbreak. “Thanks to everyone who went out yesterday to support the film. I know times are crazy and uncertain right now, but we should never be controlled by fear. Stay healthy and remember God is in control! Love you guys! #istillbelieve,” he wrote.
