The Emmy nominations for 2009 were announced this morning and the biggest surprise of all was the inclusion of the Fox animated series, “Family Guy”–a show that’s known for keeping the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on their toes with their raunchy jokes and has been cancelled twice.
Even more surprising, the show about the dysfunctional Griffin family–Peter Lois, Meg, Chris, Stewie, and dog Brian–was nominated in the “Outstanding Comedy Series,” category, only the second animated series ever to be nominated in that category (the first was “The Flintstones” in 1961), and not in the less prestigious “Outstanding Animated Program (Less Than 1 Hour)” category. The show’s creator Seth MacFarlane also got a nod in the “Outstanding Voice-Over Performance” category, as Peter Griffin in the episode “I Dream of Jesus” (check out a clip from that episode).
