religionvotingpatterns.gifThe new Pew poll shows that Obama has made slight inroads among white evangelicals, from 21-percent in September to 24-percent last week. That’s roughly in line with how Democratic presidential candidates have performed, pre John Kerry.

But the bigger news is Obama’s jump among white Catholics, where he’s totally reversed McCain’s lead. Last month, McCain led 48-percent to 41-percent among white Catholics. Now, Obama’s up 49-percent to 41-percent. And here’s a fascinating tidbit: McCain’s 16-point lead among weekly church attending White Catholics from last month has evaporated. The candidates are now dead even among those voters. Obama’s strenuous Catholic outreach is finally starting to pay off.
