Science has known for decades that obesity is a contributing factor to heart and cardiovascular diseases, and for certain cancers.  Now, there’s a new study that links waist size to higher risk for death.
The medical journal, Archives of Internal Medicine, published the results of a study, titled Waist Circumference and All-Cause Mortality in a Large US Cohort.
It is based on a long-term study with many people, 48 500 men and 56 343 women, 50 years or older, in a Cancer Prevention Study.  Basically, the risk is doubled if you have a large BMI, or Body Mass Index.  It’s especially connected in women.
Quoting from an article on the study in the New York Times by Tara Parker-Pope,  “Having a large waist is associated with large amounts of visceral fat around the abdominal organs, which can cause inflammation, high cholesterol, insulin resistance and other problems linked with poor health.”
So, again, keep your weight down and your waist size low if you want to live longer.
