A church in Texas was burned to the ground, but when the rubble cleared, a cross stood tall.

Pastor Sonny Smith of the Balsora Baptist Church says the standing cross was a “sign from God.”

“To me, that was a sign from God, saying, ‘Don’t worry, I’m still here, and I’m going to lead you forward,'” Smith told KDFW-TV.

Pastor Smith continued by saying, “Shed some tears together over what was — but also create some excitement for what God plans for us in the future, I can tell you what’s inside of our church family: it’s faith.”

Firefighters on the scene were baffled but also believed there may have been divine intervention with the fire. The Boonsville-Balsora Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook about the miracle.

‘A devastating loss to our community, but a sight to behold. The fire took the structure, but not the cross. A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The church is the congregation, and where 2 or more gather, there he shall be also.’

The pastor’s wife Lanita was working at her daycare when she received the devastating news that their sanctuary was going up in flames. Their house of worship was undergoing remodeling when contractors left for lunch, and the roof quickly caught fire.

“It’s sad, but it’s a happy time that we’re going to, we’re going to get through this and we know God’s in it, We’re just, we’re just going to be anxious to see what God has planned for us,” Lanita said.

The historic church had some parts that were nearing 100 years old so the loss is irreparable.

The charred cross that remained standing was the very cross members used for prayer requests. Members would write their prayers down on tags that were then hung on the cross for all to see.

There was a scary moment for the brave men battling the fire. As firefighters attempted to put out the fire from inside the church, the roof collapsed on them, so a few had to be treated for minor injuries. Thankfully there were no deaths or major injuries sustained.

This isn’t the first time a miracle like this has been witnessed. There have been so many stories around the globe of bibles, crosses, and other faith relics surviving a catastrophic disaster that prompts us to ask the question, was it by coincidence or was it a sign from God?
