“God of underdogs, hear our Hanukkah prayer. You love the hopeless cause, when it is your cause, because impossible situations allow you to prove your kindness, your power, and your flawless memory. You love to remember your promises, especially your promise to side with the poor and underprivileged against the proud and self-sufficient. Remember that promise on our behalf, today. Without your intervention in this case, injustice will prevail.

Remember your miracles so long ago, the miracle we remember with Hanukkah. Remember the impossible odds; remember the lost cause; remember the hopelessness; remember the ‘Cinderella story’ turnaround… and do it again, here and now. As in Israel of old, when you brought the surprising victory of the Jews against their invaders, bring the same for us and our just – and otherwise hopeless – cause. We will not forget to give you credit.

Thank you, our God of amazing endings… You are God of Hanukkah, and we here dare to remind you that you ask to be reminded in prayer, to remember your promises for justice.

We pray this in Jesus…”
