The 87th Oscar Awards ceremony opened with host Neil Patrick Harris singing an original song by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (the people who wrote the the music for Disney’s Frozen). During the tribute to moving pictures, he was joined on stage by Anna Kendrick (in full Cinderella gown from Into the Woods) and “interrupted” by Jack Black. The best part was a montage of movie clips where Harris was inserted observing what was going on in the scene. While not as good or as enjoyable as previous productions by Billy Crystal in years past, it was still pretty clever. Harris is a good host, but his jokes were groaners and actually wore out his welcome by the end. The ongoing schtick about his own Oscar predictions grew tiresome as night went on and there no real payoff in the end.

Birdman was the big winner of the night winning four awards including Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Cinematography. Next in line was The Grand Budapest Hotel winning awards for costume design, makeup and hairstyling, production design and original score. Eddie Redmayne won for Best Actor (The Theory of Everything) and Julianne Moore for best actress (Still Alice). Disney also won it big too winning both Animation Picture (Big Hero 6) and Animation Short (Feast).

Musical performances included Adam Levine singing “Lost Stars” from Begin Again. Tegan and Sara and The Lonely Island performed “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie with a large crew of costumed characters representing Lego characters (Some handed out statuettes created out of Legos to some of the stars in the audience). Tim McGraw sang a touching tribute to Glen Campbell with “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from the documentary Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me. Jennifer Hudson sang the tribute song for the members of the Academy that have passed away. Rita Ora performed “Grateful” from the movie Beyond the Lights, and Common and John Legend performed “Glory” from the movie Selma which also won the Oscar for Original Song.

Perhaps the best moment of the night was when John Travolta was joined by Idina Menzel (not listed as a presenter) to help him read the nominees for Best Original Song. The biggest shock of the evening was when Lady Gaga came out to a sing a melody tribute to the Sound of Music. (Who knew she could be so classy?) After her standing ovation, she was followed by the legendary Julie Andrews who read the nominees for Best Original Score.
