Our Lady of Weight Loss

Neuroscience: You cannot break a habit.

Are you strong enough to break your habit?
Well, you may think you are, but the truth of that matter is that you cannot break or change a habit. You can, however, create new, better and even stronger habits. And while you may think that the old habits are forever gone, they are simply hiding out. At some point in time, one or more will get triggered.
Therefore, it is important that on that day that you mysteriously find yourself covered in cookie dough, after months and months of fat-burning perfection, that you simply remember this: An old habit got triggered. Plain and simple. No big deal.
In the old days, a tsunami of defeat may have rolled in and crushed you. But now you know better, don’t you? You are not weak, you are not bad, nor are you a failure. You are simply human and a habit came out of hiding. You can now continue moving forward on your journey to “Sveltesville.”
As Our Lady of Weight Loss says, “All is forgiven, move on!”

I’m sorry, what tenet of neuroscience says you cannot break or change a habit? You cite absolutely no references and present this as an absolutely fact. Old habits can indeed be entirely extinguished, and never “get triggered” at one point or another. Your entire argument is untenable.

My old habits got triggered by a whole bunch of stressful situations this summer. Habits that I thought I had banished with my new habits. All is forgiven and I am moving on! Thanks Janice!

Habits will go away as long as your determined and focus!

Where is your proof that old habits cannot be broken? Are you an authority on behavioral science? Is there some valid study that suggests this? You may mean well, but a statement like this can deter people from breaking bad habits if they believe it will be useless. Please be more careful in your pronouncements.
