The Serpent Beguiled Me, and I Did Tweet: A Twible Presentation

Here’s a 12-minute talk I gave last month about the Twible project, with some of my favorite tweets from the Old Testament. Hope you enjoy it.

Jethro gave Moses the Melchizedek Priesthood (D&C 84:6–7). The Melchizedek Priesthood was among the Midianites. Moses was not allowed to pass on the Melchizedek Priesthood. Only the Aaronic Priesthood went forward. Killing the Midianites kept the Midianites from passing on the Melchizedek Priesthood.

God causes his messengers to be abrupt so the least common denominator will follow the party line. Hence injustice is perceived in God’s actions. But, God’s will is done. Doing is the important thing. The understanding will come later. We look through a glass darkly now but later we will understand (1Cor. 13: 12).

Great talk, Jana! I’m so glad this is posted and I got to see you in action. Can’t wait to read the new book.

DMc, the idea that God had to kill the Midianites in order to preserve the priesthood is so pernicious and horrible that it’s hard to know how to respond. What kind of God is that? What sort of justice?

Any priesthood preserved through genocide would be an abomination, and any God who required the murder of innocents is not worthy of our worship. Period.

You forget, Jana, that God will dry our tears and make up for all sadness (Revelation 21:4). Justice does not come on Earth. Was Abinadi fairly treated (Mosiah 17:20)? Did God sic the Devil on Job because Job deserved it? Time on Earth and what happens here is nothing compared to eternity and where it is possible for us to ascend.

Don’t be angry because God sets things up in patterns or allows injustice on Earth. God allowed 9/11 to happen. God allowed the Holocaust to happen. God allowed Haun’s Mill and the Extermination Order to happen and allows Lucifer among us. Have you checked out of Mormonism and all of Christianity for these atrocities yet? Will you, if I remind you of more sadness. No.

Nobody deserved any of it. Sinless children die of starvation for lack of Heaven sent rain. There is no Gravity; Earth Sucks!

When we receive our final reward we will rejoice no matter what because we will receive more than we are worth. All because we didn’t turn our backs to God’s Plan. If we even remember Earth 200 eons from now we will look back and say, “no harm, no foul.”

None of this Earth time means anything except to show us, fairly, why we won’t be exalted or help us to understand how we lucked out and got exalted. Also, to help us understand why selfishness is not tolerated in an eternal setting. We aren’t proving anything to God down here. We are proving ourselves to ourselves. God knows the end from the beginning (Abraham 2:8) so he could have saved time and assigned us our eventual glory in the pre-mortal world but that would not have been fair. Would it?

God gave us patterns so we won’t be deceived by false doctrine while we are here. This part of the pattern let’s us know that holding the Melchizedek Priesthood does not guarantee exaltation. If you want to see the pattern that runs from the Bible to the BoM to D&C and then to PoGP, you’ll have to read my book.

You shouldn’t use that, “my God wouldn’t do that,” line if you’ve already accepted all the other bad stuff, God didn’t stop, by remaining a Christian. And the slaughter didn’t preserve the higher priesthood, the slaughter wiped it out. And where does it say the Midianites were innocent? They enslaved all Israel (Judges 6). Are you upset that God laid waste to Egypt for the same reason?

I apologize for not making these things clear in my earlier post. Good questions though.
