The events recently in Japan are very alarming. First, the earthquake and the resultant Tsunami were devastating, and so tragic. We are seeing pictures of whole towns and cities destroyed. Families missing, loved ones killed. Oh so horrible.

Now, though, attention has shifted to the far worse pending nuclear reactor explosions and meltdown situation. It’s not just one reactor damaged, it is four. It’s unbelievable that any government or corporation would allow antique designs of four nuclear power plants right next to one another that had cooling pumps without sufficient backups to continue operation. It’s shocking that there really was no backup plan that worked!

Even more shocking and unacceptable is the reality that as potentially dangerous and uncontrollable as all nuclear reactor power generation is, and given the history of catastrophic events such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and now in Japan, that we would allow nuclear power generation to continue at all. Look, for example, at the antique design and inadequate backups at Indian Point Nuclear Power generators, just 35 miles from one of the biggest cities on earth, New York City!

Look at maps in newspapers and on television of so many American nuclear power plants on earthquake-prone fault lines! Come on! Get real!

All the while we continue to ruin the earth and contribute to global warming by burning coal (think of dangerous coal mines and trapped-miners) for electric power. Think of the environmental costs of burning fossil fuels for heat and transportation. The harsh realities are staggering. And we just go on allowing them.

Look at off-shore drilling and the disasters and travesties to our natural lands committed by greedy and irresponsible corporations like Exxon (the Valdez disaster) and BP (Gulf crisis), Look how governments even subsidize this destructivity. Now, look at the possible damage to drinking water and nature from natural gas fractured pressure drilling. How can this happen? Money talks, human lives and destruction of nature are disregarded.

God graced us with lots of natural energy from the sun, and the wind, and ocean waves, for example. Let’s use them! They don’t pollute and are freely available, with no dangers or costs to the environment. Let’s find ways of making money from energy generation and distribution that have no danger or destruction attached.

It’s high time. Or it will be too late for our next generations.
