Hooray! The nation’s largest grocery supermarket chain, Walmart, announced the other day that they will make their in-store food brands healthier. Their canned and processed goods will, in the next five years, have less sugar, fat and salt. Its a big step, and it’s great. But not enough.

Walmart’s senior vice president and Michelle Obama had a press conference to announce it. Along with changes in their processed, canned and frozen foods, they are going to lower the price of fruits and vegetables. These are all terrific actions. Walmart, being the biggest, will then start a wave of influence with other manufacturers of food, and other suppliers.

In several news reports, print and TV, reporters often cited that processed foods, with high amounts of sugar, carbohydrates, fats and salts, are cheaper than healthier food. I just don’t see that as true. Last year I wrote about this myth in my “Give Back Diet.”

One just needs to change the mind, and do a little price comparison and make an effort. You can eat fairly healthfully, for little money. You just have to choose different things than you may be used to eating. Instead of breads, have salads that you make yourself. Instead of pre-made frozen entrees which are fairly expensive and contain a lot of fat, salt and sugar, buy a lean cut of chicken or fish, and make a simple sauce. Go to salad bars at supermarkets, instead of fast food drive-throughs.

Even though Walmart will make changes for the better, they say it will take five years. And only 10% reductions in sugar, fats and salt. That’s a start, which is great.

Thanks Walmart, and Michelle Obama. A step in the right direction!
