The Meaning of Maundy Thursday

Tonight, I will attend a Maundy Thursday service. It is part of  Holy Week leading to Easter Sunday.

The word, “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word mandatum,  meaning commandment . If refers to the commandments Jesus gave His disciples at the Last Supper, the night He was betrayed. He told them to love with humility by serving one another and to remember His sacrifice through the breaking of bread and wine that was about to be received. It was the Passover meal. Jesus took bread and wine and blessed it. With the bread, He said this represented His body given for us and that we are to break this bread and eat in remembrance of Him. He then took the cup of wine, blessed it and told His disciples it represented His blood, poured out for us. Do this also in remembrance  of  Him. This is why tonight, at my church, we will have a Communion Service, remembering the Last Supper and Jesus’ commands.

For me, it is a night set aside to be reflective and commemorate the life of Christ, His crucifixion and glorious resurrection–to remember the incredible sacrifice of our Savior did for us and be thankful. Tomorrow is always a solemn day as we remember Good Friday, but then Easter, the best day of the year, follows!

So my friends, remember what Christ did for you this Maundy Thursday. Give thanks, love with humility and serve one another.

I like you blog and take on Maundy Thursday. Jesus has given us a powerful reminder and real presence of his death, resurrection and love to celebrate often. Thank you. I have just one comment: Jesus did not say the bread/wine represent his body and blood, but that “this is” my body and blood. It is much more than symbolic, the real presence of Christ is in the elements making this a powerful meal. Paul tells us that some have sinned againt the body and blood. One cannot sin against an inanimate object which is what the body/blood would be if it only represented Christ. The elements did not turn into real blood and flesh after eaten, but God has placed his presence in a mysterious way and it’s important to recognize that even if we don’t understand the how.
Thanks again for your insight and standing for truth.
