Do you tend to overthink? Being an overthinker is very common in the modern day. Constantly ruminating on past mistakes, problems, and conversations is a sure sign that you're an overthinker. Thankfully, you don't have to continue down the road of overthinking. Instead, you can take your stand and better manage your life.
1. You Are Overly Anxious
If you are overly anxious, you could be an overthinker. When you open your laptop or planner for the day, do you automatically think about all the things that have to be done? Are you staying up all night, wondering about what will happen tomorrow?
Constant stress, fear, and anxiety about the future point to overthinking. If you are struggling with feeling incredibly anxious about every task, either at work or at home, try breaking up your tasks into smaller bite-sized portions. For example, if doing the chores is too much for you right now, try to just start the laundry or preheat the oven.
Rather than giving in to anxiety, lean into God. Cast your cares on to Him and allow Him to keep you steady (1 Peter 5:7). Paul tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Surrender your anxiety to God and allow Him to calm your weary spirit.
2. You Second-Guess Yourself
How often do you second-guess yourself? Perhaps you finished a task at work, yet you keep returning to it “just to make sure” everything looks okay. Second-guessing yourself is a clear sign that you are an overthinker. Rather than giving in to self-doubts, try to build self-confidence. What are a few things that make you feel strong and capable?
Perhaps this is going for a morning run, finishing a puzzle, or learning a new skill. Cultivate confidence in yourself by slowing down and appreciating the things you can do. With time, you will begin to feel more confident in yourself and cease the habit of second-guessing yourself. This, in turn, will help you stop overthinking.
3. Feeling Restless
Feeling restless is a clear indicator that you are an overthinker. Constantly feeling restless will cause you to be unproductive at work and in your home life. If you feel restless, take time to go outside, go for a walk, or do something to release pent-up energy. Releasing restlessness will help eradicate overthinking in your life. Give it a try and see if it radically helps you become more focused and calm in your everyday life.
4. Replaying Past Mistakes
Being an overthinker will cause you to replay past mistakes in your mind — over and over again. Unsubscribe from this time of thinking by acknowledging what happened but ceasing to relive it day after day. Everyone makes mistakes; there is no reason to beat yourself down over them. Challenge yourself to look at how far you have come and how much you have learned since making this mistake.
With time, your tendency to dwell on past mistakes will fade black. Instead of obsessing over past mistakes or awkward encounters, you will let bygones be bygones. As the old saying goes, “Don't cry over spilled milk.” Follow the words of Paul, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).
5. You Tend to Catastrophize
Catastrophizing is another sign that you are an overthinker. How often do you think to yourself, “This is not going to work out!” Rather than dwelling on these worries or fearing the worst, look to Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). When you look at Jesus, your weary soul will soar. Cultivate hope and confidence in God and watch your tendency to catastrophize vanish.
6. Sleep Disturbances
Overthinking can also manifest in sleep disturbances. How often do you wake up at night? Does your mind race with stressful thoughts, worries, or impending doom? What would life look like without all these problems in your life? If you are struggling with sleep disturbances, make it a practice to go to the Lord in prayer when you wake up.
Ask the Lord, “Dear Jesus, please calm my anxious mind. Remind me that You are with me, You are for me, and You love me. Bless me with a good night's sleep and help me to rise above these struggles. Take away all my worries and replace them with your peace. In Your Name, I pray, Amen.”
Not getting enough sleep will result in less energy, motivation, and productivity over the course of your day. Therefore, try to lean into God and talk with Him when you find yourself waking up at night. Cast all your worries onto Him and allow Him to carry your heavy burdens (Matthew 11:28-30).
A few signs that you are an overthinker include being overly anxious, second-guessing yourself, feeling restless, replaying past mistakes, catastrophizing, and suffering from sleep disturbances. By turning to God, casting your cares onto Him, and making a few changes in your life, you can overcome these struggles.
