If you would prefer to vocalize, chanting has been used for healing, relaxation, and religious connection for centuries, from the Far East to Ancient Greece to Native American tribes. Buddhists believe chanting can prepare you for a meditation or it can be used as a meditation in itself. You may want to find a mantra to which you are drawn, a short sequence of words or syllables to rhythmically repeat over and over. You can choose a quote you like, or a single word, such as “relax,” “calm," or “peace," or you can use the Om/Aum, Hindu’s most sacred mantra that evokes creation and divine energy. Mantras can be soothing, inspirational, and are believed to have transformative power.
