Wellness has become a trendy topic that encourages people to care for their minds and bodies. The Bible has been promoting these concepts for centuries. It also includes instructions for how you can nourish your soul.

While the world may seem chaotic and busy, the Bible reminds you to set aside time for daily wellness practices that put God at the center of your life. As a result, you should feel more centered and peaceful, regardless of how the world changes.

1. Start Your Day With Prayer and Thanksgiving

Scientific studies show that practicing gratitude has several mental and physical health benefits. Adopting a gratitude practice could help you:

  • Maintain better emotional and social well-being

  • Improve your sleep quality

  • Boost your cardiovascular health

  • Lower the risk of depression

Some research shows that gratitude could even extend your life.

While science only started researching gratitude within the last few decades, Christians have used it for centuries. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Starting your day with prayer and thanksgiving sets a positive tone that will influence your entire day. Other daily spiritual habits to embrace include praying before meals, finding opportunities to help others, writing in a gratitude journal, and communicating with God throughout the day.

2. Move Your Body With Purpose

God cares about your physical health as well as your spiritual health. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit... honor God with your bodies."

By keeping your body healthy, you'll have more energy to praise God and do His will.

Some options for moving your body with purpose include:

Really, though, you can use any type of exercise you prefer. Just make sure you bring purpose and intentionality to your movement. Doing so will help build a mind-body connection that promotes physical health and a better mood.

3. Feed Your Soul With God’s Word

Matthew 4:4 says, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." In other words, you need to tend to your spiritual health as well as your physical health. Just as you eat multiple meals a day, you should set aside time each day to nourish your soul.

What daily practices will nourish your soul? Popular options include:

  • Reading the Bible to find inspiration, guidance, and solace

  • Praying to give thanks and ask for God's guidance

  • Setting aside time to reflect on the world's beauty

  • Noticing the gifts God has given you

You don't have to follow a specific type of practice, though. Find what works for you. As long as it nourishes your soul and puts you in communication with God, it will contribute to your well-being.

4. Practice Rest and Stillness

Many people see "workaholism" as a worthwhile habit. Some of the wealthiest, most influential people on the planet, including Elon Musk, boast that they work 80 to 100 hours a week.

While working all day might lead to some financial success, it forces you to sacrifice much more important pursuits.

The Bible encourages readers to make time for rest and reflection. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 127:2 furthers that concept when it says, "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for He grants sleep to those He loves."

By making time for rest, you create time to deepen your relationship with God, family, and community. Honor God's command for biblical self-care so you will have the strength to carry out His plan. Otherwise, there's a good chance you'll get misled by work and money as false idols that steal time from your connection to God.

5. Speak Life Over Yourself and Others

The words you speak have tremendous power over your perspective of the world. Pay close attention to the words you choose so you can use them to encourage, bless, and uplift the people around you.

Negative words will have the opposite effect, and they could sour your view of God's creation. By speaking life over yourself and others, you focus on the wonder of the world instead of getting distracted by problems.

The Bible agrees that words have power. Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

What does that mean? By speaking words of life, you get to enjoy the fruits of life. By speaking words of death (negativity), you suffer the fruits of death.

6. End the Day With Reflection and Surrender

While you have some influence over your life, God is always in control. There's no point, therefore, in constantly worrying. Instead, it makes sense to submit yourself to God's will and trust in Him.

As 1 Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."

How can you practice this in your daily life? Many people like to end their days with moments of reflection and surrender. Take time to say a prayer, read the Bible, and listen for God to lead you. He wants to take your burdens from you. You only need to surrender them to Him.

Wellness isn't a trend. It's a biblical principle. God wants you to live a happy, healthy life. By incorporating these six practices into your daily routine, you can take care of yourself and deepen your relationship with God.
