Jen was too nice. "How was your day? You must be so tired, I'm so sorry you have such a long commute." Eye roll.
Jen and Jim have been together since high school, married 7 years, (is the itch for real?) always respectful of each other, always kind to one another. Happy. Until that November day when Jim got fed up with the status quo. When Jen's husband decided she was too nice.
It was very likely something other than Jen's comments was bothering him. Yet that's what set him off. Jim said, "You're too nice. It's like living with Mother Teresa."
Jim was suffocating from too much attention. He was stressed by feeling like he always had to live up to his "nice perfect wife." There were times when Jen's compulsion to be nice caused him to feel like the bad guy. And now, after all these years, his wife annoyed him.
