Most Americans believe in creationism. A Gallop Poll found that 42 percent of people believe that humans were created in present form by God 10,000 years ago. It dropped from 46 percent when the poll was conducted in 2012, with 15 percent saying that humans evolved without intelligent design. Results of the survey were based on telephone interviews with a sample of 1, 028 adults in the U.S. and a sampling error of ±4 percentage.
The Gallup Values and Beliefs, first started in 1982, posed three-part statements to gage callers beliefs.
- Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process.
- Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process.
- God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.
The survey also indicated that people who have more of a secularist view of how humans developed into the present form has doubled since 1999. Many Americans are not familiar with the term creationism as they were six years ago. That number has dropped from 86 percent to 76 percent from 2007.
Youth were less accepting of creationism compared to Americans 65 years or older and people who attended church regularly also believed in intelligent design. An estimated 83 percent of millennials said they never doubted God according to a Pew study, but that was in 2007.
“The Millennial generation is far less religious than were other preceding generations when they were the same age years ago.”
When the Gallop Poll was conducted in 1982, 38 percent of people believed God created mankind compared to 31 percent in 2014.
