An enormous amount of time and effort is put into your wedding day. You spend tireless hours planning, organizing, swooning and flat out obsessing over your wedding day. You may have been one of those individuals who dreamed about your big day since you were a little girl. You may even have a cute little countdown until the big day. It’s no secret; every single bride wants the perfect wedding day.

But guess what?

When your wedding day arrives all of your planning will be set in motion the time has finally come for you to sit back and enjoy all of your tireless efforts.

It is important to remember that a wedding is only a couple of hours, but a marriage is a lifetime. A wedding marks the beginning of a sacred covenant, a promise to each other of your love and intention for the future. Your wedding day is a celebration of your love and the beginning of your life together with your partner.

Brides need to remember this throughout the wedding planning process and as they feel themselves getting overwhelmed.

Below are some helpful tips on how to enjoy your big day and alleviate stress on your wedding day.

Break New Shoes in Before Your Wedding

The last thing you want to do is wobble down the aisle or make a run to Walgreens for band aids because you have blisters from new shoes. Once you purchase your wedding shoes, it’s a good idea to break them in. Breaking in new shoes does not have to be an excruciating process. We have all suffered from painful blisters and sore feet. You do not want to suffer on your wedding day.

Spend some time each night walking around the house in your new shoes. Wear your new shoes in little spurts here and there to break them in. Wearing the shoes in little bits each day will break them in without breaking you.

If you find that you still need to stretch the shoes out more try filing a freezer bag of water until it’s half full. Gently squeeze any additional air out and tightly seal the bag. Place the shoes into the freezer with the freezer bags of water, and leave overnight or until the water is frozen. When the water hardens into ice it will expand your shoes.

If you’re not comfortable putting your new shoes in the freezer try wearing plush socks while walking around throughout the house in your new shoes. The thickness of the socks will help expand the shoes.

Whatever you do, be sure to wear wedding shoes that are best for you, are comfortable, and you have broken in ahead of your wedding day!

Pray and Meditate

Planning a wedding is not for the weak or timid, it’s an exhausting task. With so much to do and stay on top of it is easy to become emotional and overwhelmed.

Each day take time to pray and thank God for the blessings in your life. You might want to keep a copy of the Daily Guideposts as a reminder of how blessed you are. Devotionals usually include a Bible verse, a reflection of that verse, and usually a short prayer. They can be both inspiring and comforting. They will help keep you calm and thankful throughout your wedding planning process.

Meditating is another great way to clear your head of worries. Start focusing on the in and out cycle of your breath for just a few minutes each day or when you are lying in bed at night. Meditating will also slow your heart rate and relax your muscles, making you a stronger, healthier bride to be.

Hug and Kiss as Often as Possible

Kissing is an instant pick me up. An affectionate hug and kiss is a way of expressing hope and love. When we are boosted with love we can achieve whatever we want. We feel invincible.

According to Virginia Satir, a respected family therapist, we need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth. Hugs allow us to let go and be present in the moment. Hugging and kissing encourages empathy and understanding in a relationship as well as bonding a couple.

You are planning a future with someone not just a big party, it is important to remember that throughout your planning and to take time to be affectionate with your future spouse.

On your wedding day it is important to be present and not to get wrapped up in details that you will not remember in 40 years. Be sure to hug and kiss throughout your wedding day, not just when your photographer tells you or when that older relative clanks their glasses for the bride and groom to kiss. Time spent showering your future spouse with hugs and kisses will create a strong foundation for your marriage.

Fourty years from now when you flip through your wedding album you will want to see photos of you and your spouse hugging, kissing in love enjoying your wedding day.

Take Better Care of Yourself

You want to be your best self (inside and out) for the big day. Nutrition and exercise play a key role in how we look and feel. First, banish the word diet. You are creating a healthier lifestyle. Don’t deny yourself your favorite foods, simply cut back on portions and eat smarter. One of the best things you can do for yourself is limit your intake of sugar. Are you a big soft drink person? Try cutting soft drinks out completely or limiting your intake. Do you put excessive amounts of sugar in your morning cup of Joe? Try using a sugar substitute.

Drink water! Besides being good for you, water helps your body flush out toxins, and constant sipping throughout the day can help prevent you from over snacking. Eight glasses a day is the recommended number of glasses you should have, but the true amount of water your body requires is based on your weight. To determine how much your need simply divide your weight in half and the resulting number equals the ounces of water you should be drinking each day. Please keep in mind this is an estimate some adults need more or less depending upon how healthy they are, how much they exercise, and how hot and dry the climate is.

You also might want to consider upping your pre-wedding workout routine if you haven’t already. Exercise has positive emotional and psychological effects. Take a walk with your fiancée around the neighborhood or incorporate a morning jog into your routine. Any time of physical movement will produce more uplifting and stress stabilizing endorphins.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Countless married couples often roll their eyes and tell horror stories of how they had no time to eat or barley danced at their wedding. They were either taking care of last minute details, taking photos, greeting guests, or just too caught up in unimportant details.

Do not be that couple.

Your wedding day is your day; your guests are there to celebrate your love and your life together as a newly married couple. It is important to be present in every single moment and that includes eating and dancing. Your guests want you to enjoy your day. Make it a priority to sit down, eat and hydrate yourselves throughout your wedding. Make it a priority to dance the night away with your new spouse.

Take a moment during your wedding and grab your new spouse’s hand. Quietly observe your guests from afar. Remember that your guests are there to celebrate your love and to bless your marriage.
