No one wants to hear that their wedding was very similar to someone else’s ceremony or reception. They do not want their special day to seem repetitive or boring or hear that other people have been to a dozen weddings at this same location. Most people would have the tact not to say anything along these lines to the faces of the bride or groom, but that does not mean that newlyweds are not aware of it. Some couples do not mind the sense of tradition that can go along with having a very classic or even stereotypical wedding. Other people, however, loathe the idea of having their special day be anything less than jaw-droppingly memorable. For some people, that means choosing an unusual wedding location. Other people, however, go to truly extraordinary lengths to make sure their wedding is nothing like anyone has ever seen in the past. Here are five unusual weddings that are truly unique.

Bungee Jumping Bride

Everyone has heard of building castles in the sky, but how about planning a wedding in the sky? Well, that is exactly what a couple from Brussels, Belgium did for their special day. The bride and groom decided to go all out when they tied the knot. The wedding was very small. There was only the couple, the officiant and 20 guests. This was unsurprising, perhaps, given that the ceremony took place over 160 feet in the air. The guests enjoyed a floating reception as well as a high-flying ceremony where they enjoyed a three course meal while strapped into their dining chairs.

Although the wedding undoubtedly offered incredible views, the families of the bride and groom were served a heart attack as well as a delicious meal. When the newlyweds had finished exchanging their vows, they climbed over the side of the platform and went bungee jumping together in front of all their guests. Most parents cry when they watch their children marry. These four may well have fainted.

Shark Tank Ceremony

New Yorkers have done some very strange things over the years, but this one might take the wedding cake. A New York couple decided to have an unusual wedding by holding the ceremony underwater. These New Yorkers, however, were not content with simply exchanging their vows in SCUBA gear. They decided to add a little extra flair in the form of several thousand teeth. The couple held their wedding ceremony inside a 120,000 gallon shark tank. The bride, groom and officiant stood in a shark cage and broadcasted their words to each other and their friends and family who stood nervously outside the tank. The bride wore a white wetsuit while the groom wore black, and a number of different types of eels and sharks acted as unofficial witnesses to the union. One has to wonder if the couple took their regulators out to exchange a kiss or if they waited until they surfaced.

Weightless Wedding

Entire generations grew up watching footage of astronauts seemingly flying through the air. This footage, and the astronauts’ resultant impossible-on-earth antics, has entrenched the image of the human body floating in zero gravity in the minds of billions. Almost every child alive, and most adults, has dreamed of one day experiencing zero gravity for themselves. One lucky New York couple got to do exactly that when they tied the knot. The couple did not get to hold their wedding among the stars in a space shuttle or space station, but they did get to have their wedding in zero-g’s. The couple held their ceremony aboard a Boeing 727-200 aircraft, the sort of parabola-flying plane affectionately nicknamed “the Vomit Comet.” The couple said “I do” during one of the plane’s dives and resultant low gravity atmosphere while the guests floated around them. To complete the space theme, the ceremony was officiated by Richard Garriott who had enjoyed the real zero-g experience during his time as an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

Best Bear

Everyone has heard of women that become bridezilla during the weeks or days leading up to the wedding, but has anyone ever heard of a best man who was a bear? Strange as it sounds, this is exactly what happened for the wedding of naturalist Casey Anderson and actress Missy Pyle. Instead of picking a human companion to stand beside him at his wedding, Anderson tapped the 800 pound grizzly bear, Brutus, to serve as his best man.

Anderson raised Brutus since he was a cub and includes the bear in nearly every aspect of his daily life. The bear swims in the family pool, wrestles gently with Anderson and even gets a seat at the dining room table for special events such as birthdays and Thanksgiving. There is no word yet as to what Brutus thought of Anderson and Pyle’s wedding cake.

Shoe Department “I Do”

Most people have a store that is there go-to for shopping. Some people are Macy’s fans. Others prefer Nordstrom. Still others swear by Kohl’s, JC Penny, Loft or Target. Many of these people would proclaim that they are the ultimate Kohl’s shopper or biggest fan of Target. No one, however, can top the self-proclaimed “Maxxinista” who held her wedding in TJ Maxx. TJ Maxx was the bride’s “happy place,” and so she wanted the happiest day of her life to take place there. Her groom agreed, and the two were married in the shoe department of TJ Maxx. Bemused shoppers became involuntary guests and unofficial witnesses as they paused to see why there were people exchanging wedding vows in the size 8 aisle. One can only hope that TJ Maxx gave the bride and groom a wedding day discount.
