How a Woman Should Treat a Man According to God

There are a lot of misconceptions about what it means to be a Godly wife. Some people cherry pick Bible verse that make it sound like woman should always submit to their husbands every wish and desire, no matter what. This leads to broken relationships that do not exemplify God’s love at all.

When the Bible is read in its entirety, we can begin to truly understand what it means to be a proper Christian wife. We learn that there are expectations placed on both people in the relationship that God wants us to strive to live up to. In the end, God should always be at the center of any marriage. He can guide us to be the best version of ourselves we can be. Being a Christian wife isn’t always easy, but we never have to do it alone.

Here are some key Bible verses that show us what it means to be a Godly wife.

She should be noble and graceful.

“A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4).

Being a noble woman means holding yourself up to the higher standard all Christians do. You should be striving to be more like Christ each day, not only because you are a Christian but also because you want to be the best version of yourself you can be for your husband and family. Do not fall short and give into Satan’s desires, for that only will bring your husband further away from Christ as well. God tells us that we are incredibly worthy to our family, and we should strive to live up to those expectations He places on us.

She should provide companionship.

“It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18).

While all of us are called to be helpers, the Bible places special emphasis on the responsibility of wives. Note though that the Hebrew meaning of helper in this passage really means that woman have the power to create goodness in their husbands’ lives. The wife has a special ability to lift their husband up to become all he is meant to be. Through their companionship, their husbands can thrive! Be there for your husband. Be a shoulder for him to lean on, a person he knows he can trust and talk to, and enjoy the time you all spend together. This creates a loving environment for everyone.

She should respect his leadership.

“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (1 Corinthians 11:3).

When many women hear this, they get worried and sometimes angered. It’s been a controversial concept that a woman submits to the leadership of her husband, but that’s typically because it’s misunderstood. Submission to your husband should never mean blind obedience. Scripture makes it clear that a wife should voluntarily submit to her husband’s loving leadership, and that doing so helps him fulfill his responsibilities as a true Godly husband. By respecting your husband’s leadership role, you are helping create him to becoming the leader God intended him to be.
