8 Things to Say to Your Husband Instead of 'I Love You'

Never go to bed angry and always say I love you to your significant other. These are two things we hear constantly. But what happens when you say “I love you” so much that the phrase becomes expected and ends up being just words? For couples that are using the phrase “I love you” so much that it is now more of a habit it might not the same effect it did in the beginning of the relationship. It is important to remember that words always matter. Your words can have tremendous impact on your husband’s day. When we use our words wisely we can change the world, or in our case our husband’s day. A few loving words spoken to your husband can really brighten up his otherwise hectic and dull day. The words you choose can make him want to rush home to you or linger at the office. The choice is yours to make. Below are a few things you could say to surprise your husband instead of the traditional and expected, “I love you.” These phrases can also help put some action behind your words and leave a lasting impression with your husband.

"I am more in love with you today than yesterday."

This does not mean that you love your better half more than you did yesterday. This means that you sat down really thought about your husband and your marriage and you realize how blessed you are to have him in your life. They say that you only fall in love once, but with your husband and each passing day you fall in love just a little bit more because you appreciate him. You are wise beyond your years and already know that every single day together is a blessing. You know to not take tomorrow for granted and you are not embarrassed to profess your love to your husband every single day. This doesn’t mean that there are days when you husband annoys you, but you know to never go to bed angry. Even on the bad days you appreciate him and continue to fall a little more in love with him. Every day is a new day with a new reason to love your significant other.

"I will sacrifice for you."

I will sacrifice my time for you. I will be selfless for you; I will love you unconditionally. I will love you to the moon and back. I will stay up late with you to care for our family. I will hold you when you are sick even when I have to get up early in the morning. I will care for you in sickness and in health, always and forever. When you are weak I will be your strength. When you are voiceless, I will be your voice. I will be there for you at 2AM just as I would in the middle of the afternoon. I will be there when no one else is, you can lean on me and I will be there 110% of the time. I will protect you from pain both physically and emotionally. When you are sick, I promise to serve you chicken soup in bed and call the doctor. I will run to the pharmacy in the middle of the night for medication. I will hold your hand and stand by your side during the overwhelming, difficult moments. I will always hold your heart and vow to protect you from heartache. I will protect the idea of us and the righteousness of our marriage. I vow to never belittle you. I will protect you from harm, evil and gossip. I will never allow others to put you down, especially when I am present. I will always respect your opinions and your voice will always be heard. You are safe in my arms and safe in my heart. I will always be your safety net, I am the light house calling you to shore during a dark storm.

"I appreciate you."

Let your significant other know what a tremendous impact his presence has on you. Just because you are married does not mean you stop letting your partner know how much you value time spent with him. Let him know you appreciate the little and the big things he does. This can be done with thoughtful loving gestures. This can mean bringing home flowers, baking their favorite cookies or cooking his favorite meal for no particular reason. Or it can be as simple as making a cup of coffee before he even asks, or just sending a random text message in the middle of the work day. Make time to let your husband know you appreciate him. Growing old with someone is a blessing that should not be taken for granted. Letting someone know you appreciate is the easiest way to keep them happy and motivated to do the same for you.

"I’m turning my phone and laptop off tonight."

Wow. This will blow your husband away. Shutting down immediate access to the outside world shows your husband that tonight your marriage and his feelings are your number one priority. Tonight, your family, your concerns, your laughter and sharing your day is what is important. No one can interrupt, not even for a quick text message, not even for a second. Your focus will be on your husband and your conversation. Your focus will be on your marriage. Think about it, when was the last time you ever said anything like this? Do you even turn off your cell phone? This kind of action is so vital in today’s hectic world. Try to do this often. Get rid of all the distractions for just one evening and make your marriage your main focus. The outside world can wait. Your husband and your marriage will thank you!

"Good morning, Sunshine!"

Stop and think for a moment, do you actually smile and say good morning to your significant other each morning when you wake up? Or are you stuck in the daily rat race where you hit the alarm, stretch, mumble something to your husband and race to start the day? Unfortunately many of us are so busy rushing that we tend to forget the little things which are extremely important. Always make time for what matters. Waking up next to your soul mate and growing old with someone is a blessing. Each morning before you do anything else, roll over, smile at your significant other and whisper, “Good morning sunshine.” These little things eventually become habits for when we grow older and help set the stage for growing old with a smile on your face and your husband’s face. Life is too short to be anything but happy.

"You were right."

Let’s be honest, we all like to be right. Everyone. Men included and your husband is probably on that list. And guess what? Sometimes your husband really is right. It probably happens more often than he thinks, and more often than you would like to admit, but when your husband is right, you should really let him know. Especially when you are having a heated disagreement. Admitting someone is right can be extremely humbling and super rewarding in the end. Admitting your husband is right will help keep your marriage vibrant and will make your husband feel good while putting a big smile on his face. There is nothing more loving that someone who is compassionate and understanding. Exercising humility also shows that you are a reasonable human being while demonstrating to your husband that his feelings are more important than your pride.

It might not seem like that during the difficult moments and when you are having a disagreement, but always remember a good marriage is a figure eight. You have days when you are fused together and nothing can stop you, and you have moments when you feel like your partner is not hearing you and you are on opposite sides. That’s okay, and it’s normal. Marriage is an assortment of choices, the big ones and the little ones – but marriage is the choice to stick it out with your partner, always and forever. Reminding your husband that you are aware of your choices and you will be with him through thick and thin is imperative to keep your foundation strong. “If I had to do it all over again, I would still choose you.” This eliminates any doubt that may be in the back of his mind, and reminds him that you are in it for the long haul.

These two words are probably the most powerful words in a relationship, yet they are probably not spoken enough. Think about it, when was the last time you looked at your husband in the eyes and said, “thank you.” We show gratitude to complete strangers on a daily basis. The barista at Starbucks, the stranger who holds the door for us, the cashier at the supermarket. Why are we not thanking our spouses? Why are we not making a point to thank the person we have taken sacred vows to on a daily basis? Too often gratitude disappears and we start taking people for granted.
