Everyone has known someone that was unfortunate enough to have a cheating spouse. She may have found out about her cheating husband when she discovered a receipt for a necklace he never gave her. He may have learned about the affair when he realized that his wife’s “business trips” never took her more than one town over. A friend may have told her that the friend saw the unfortunate wife’s husband kissing another woman, and an unlucky husband may have heard from his brother-in-law that the unfaithful wife was seen speaking to a divorce lawyer.

Regardless of how the betrayed spouse found out about the affair, they were hurt. They may have gone back over months of memories and tried to figure out how they missed the signs that their spouse was cheating on them. They might also have turned the house upside down trying to learn how their spouse had hidden the affair. Then again, sometimes the cheating is flagrant or easy to catch. Most adulterers go to extraordinary lengths to hide their affairs, but there are always some who make the dumbest mistakes. Here are the five stupidest ways people get caught cheating.

Messaging Mistakes

In the last 10 years, there has been an explosion of ways to message other people. From early instant messages to emails and from texts to SnapChats, there are dozens of ways to send someone a message without picking up the phone. Many of these messaging systems allow a person to type in the first letter of the recipient’s name, and the computer or phone will fill in the rest. Some systems also recommend other people to send the message to or automatically fill in the recipient with the most commonly contacted recipient. This is very convenient in everyday life. It is also a stupid way that cheaters get caught. They mean to send a message to their mistress celebrating that their wife is out of town. Instead, they send the message to their wife. They mean to tell their boyfriend how excited they are to see him. They accidentally copy their husband on the email. It is a simple case of texting the wrong number, but it sure is hard for a cheater to explain away.

Boneheaded Bragging

All cheaters think they are clever, even when they are dumber than a box of rocks. Still, because they think they are clever or cunning or “oh, so subtle,” they want to tell someone how tricky they are and detail how they managed to pull the wool over their spouse’s eyes. So, they tell a friend that they have been sleeping with a mistress for six months, and their wife has yet to notice. They brag to a coworker that their husband is oblivious to the fact that they have a younger and more attractive boyfriend. This bragging almost inevitably gets back to their spouse. A friend might feel morally obligated to inform the betrayed spouse of the affair. The current spouse might also simply overhear the conversation, in which case the cheater has next to no hope of explaining away their vile bragging.

Scheduling Slip-Up

Most people live by some sort of general routine. They usually go to work at the same time every day and come home at approximately the same time in the evening. On Sundays, they go to the 10:00 a.m. service and get brunch with their Bible study group. They always go to the grocery store on Wednesdays after work. They may not be booked every hour of the day, but they have some habits they tend to stick to from day to day or week to week.

Having a daily or weekly routine is pretty harmless, and many people prefer their spouse to have something of a routine. It makes it easier to work around each other’s schedules. It also, however, makes it easier for a cheating spouse to hide their affair since they know when the house will be empty. Some unlucky adulterers, however, get confused and end up bringing home their lover only to find their spouse standing in the kitchen.

Band Blunder

Some so-called homewreckers are actually people whose only crime was being a bit gullible or a little too naïve. They truly did not know that they were sleeping with a married man or woman. Most of these unlucky lovers are short term flings. It is, after all, harder to maintain a falsehood the more time that passes. This does not diminish, of course, the pain that a fling causes the betrayed spouse.

When the lover is convinced that the adulterer is either single or divorced, they would never see the cheater wearing a wedding band. The one having an affair has to remove their ring anytime they visit their lover. Sometimes, however, a cheater makes a mistake with their wedding band subterfuge. They might leave it on top of their dresser and have to explain to an angry spouse why they went on a business trip without it. They might also wear it to dinner with their lover by accident. Worse still, they might lose it and be unable to explain to their lover why they are panicking or give a sufficient explanation to their angry spouse about why their wedding ring has disappeared.

Social media is a pretty big deal anymore. People plan events entirely through Facebook. They post all their pictures on Instagram. They use SnapChat to communicate. The use of social media can also get cheaters into a lot of trouble. Massive numbers of people are convinced that they are invisible when they are typing on a keyboard. They can say or do anything they want, and no one will be able to trace it back to them. This can lead to a cheater posting pictures of themselves and their girlfriend on social media and then having to face questions about why they were posing with a younger woman in a bikini when they were supposedly on a business trip in North Dakota. Adulterers might also like or comment on pictures on social media during the hours they were either “working late” or “stuck in traffic.” Social media leaves dozens of ways for a cheater to get cocky about their invisible web presence only to get caught later.
