6 Things to Do When Your Man Can’t Make You Happy

A lot of single and married women today believe that marriage is a means to an end – that all their problems will magically go away when the love of their life places a ring on their finger and they finally say “I do.” There is also an underlying expectation that the men in our lives will keep us happy at all costs. But despite the cues we get from the media, in fairy tales, and from those we believe are so happy around us, your relationship is not meant to keep you happy. Yes, your man should make you happy, but that is not the sole objective. We should be taking another path to happiness in our relationship – one that is more likely to get us where we need to be. This doesn’t begin with fixing our man, but with fixing our own hearts. Here are six things to do when your man can’t make you happy.

Have Realistic Expectations

So many relationships fall apart when fantasy turns out to be just that. It’s important that we have realistic expectations in our relationships. Being realistic doesn’t mean that you have to resign yourself to someone who doesn’t make you happy, or to a relationship that’s boring or conflict-ridden. It simply means that you have to be OK with a partner who is human, just like you, and who, like you, is imperfect. If you can let go of unrealistic expectations and accept that things won’t always be perfect, then you can pave the way for a love that’s real, in which you and your partner recognize each other for who you really are.

Practice Acceptance

One of the biggest downfalls in relationships is the idea that our partner needs to be different or at least they need to change certain things to make us happier. After all, if they loved us, they would change anything for us, right? Well, no. The key to any successful relationship would be to accept your man as he is. One big way to do this is to watch your expectations. When you start to get frustrated with your spouse, check in with your thoughts. Ask yourself is this something that your partner really needs to change for you, or can you change your expectation and meet whatever need is unfulfilled for yourself? Your partner’s responsibility isn’t to live according to your expectations. Accept the fact that your man isn’t perfect. We are all perfectly flawed.
