Scripture encourages adults to take an active role in discipling children, in making them students of Christ. The Bible tells us, “Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward for Him” (Psalm 127:3). This psalm declares that children are a reward from the Lord and should be nurtured in Christ accordingly. Whatever your child’s age, it’s important to be consistent when it comes to helping them understand and trust God’s Word. The best thing that can happen to any child is to become a growing disciple of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to You” (James 4:8). It’s important that God is the focus of your child’s life. Unfortunately, there are so many distractions today that keep children from drawing near to God. Every day, Americas spend countless hours on screen time, entertaining themselves with TV, computers, tablets and smartphones. We are always plugged in. Many children are so drawn to entertainment, they choose it over spending time with God. If your child is constantly focused on screens, guide them to focus on God’s Word. You can set the amount of time in front of all screens to one hour a day and make sure the rest of that free time is spent in God’s Word.

Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Peter was the only disciple who asked to walk out onto the water with Jesus. Yet, when he failed to keep his eyes on the Lord and sank, Jesus said, “Peter, your faith isn’t big enough if you don’t trust Me” (Matthew 14:31). If you were Peter, you might have replied, “But Lord, John didn’t come. Neither did Andrew, James, Philip or the others. I was the only one. My faith is bigger than theirs. Shouldn’t that make up for my moment of distraction?” But Jesus never weighs our faith against anyone else’s. Instead, He watches us closely and constantly to see if we will keep Jesus the center of our focus. Help your child turn their eyes upon Jesus and look into His wonderful face, in the light of His glory and grace.
